I'm about to swap a T-5 from an 84 T/A into my 90 RS.
I already have another flywheel with the one piece seal.
Some recent classified ads I've seen on these boards refer to a "starter for an automatic"...is there a difference?
The various tech articles on the swap make no reference to this.

i did the swap in my 1984 trans am. The starter worked fine.. Some others have done it, and the nose of the starter was to big to fit in the t5 bellhousing. YOU can just wait and see it might work.

I only have 30,000 miles on my 84 the starter was original and when i swapped the t5 in i used the original and it fit. some fit some dont so i wouldnt say it wont work. It might.

The auto one is like twice the size compared to the t5 and the nose of the starter is to big to fit in the t5 bell housing. It might be a 305/350 thing or the production line mixed the starters (just guessing) because some guys say it does work for them, doesn't hurt to try.

Yep, the nose on my starter was way too big. Good reason to buy a new starter.

well, alot of times if you leave the auto starter on and never remove it the bellhousing fits over it fine but, the problem happens when you need to change the starter you can't just slide it in the bellhousing. unless you carfully grind down the nose of it like I did. it voids the warr. but, I figured I would buy aftermarket mini starter by the time it goes out

what he said, at some point GM began using all the small starter, (according to the book at advance auto) but i do not know at what point that was.

i used the suto starter for awhile, but while in process of eliminating a bad vibration swapped it for the correct one thinking perhaps it was forcing something out of line. however it did not help.. strangely enough we rebuilt the carb and the vibe has been gone for 4 days now.

What he said.... The T-5 starter has a small body and nose. It will not go into the bellhousing if you have the engine and bellhousing assembled together. If the auto starter is on the engine and you slip the bellhousing onto the engine, over the starter nose and bolt it all up, it will fit but never to be replaced again!! You will have a tough time taking that starter back oot.
