Hey guys.

I have done quite a bit of searching for previous threads that might help, but I havn't found any.

Here is the deal. When I am starting from a dead stop, and the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd, the whole car shakes violently for just a second. If I take my time through the gears it doesn't happen, and If I am pushing it to the max it doesn't happen. It only happens when I am getting on it just a little. (If that makes any sense)

It almost feels like wheel hop, but I am not breaking the tires loose and I also just replaced the rear tires. Driveshaft seems to look good and the U Joints are tight. Any help would be appreciated.

TPI 305, 700R4.

tranny mount maybe? thats more of a BAM!!

Does it slip at all or does it hold power during the shift? It could be one of those dampening pistons(dam im brain dead today cant remember what theyre called) sticking. O yeah servos. It could be a sticking servo.

I would definatley check the tranny mount before you go having the servo checked out. Much cheaper and much easier to fix.

Transmission: T56, 5-speed, 700R4, C4, T176, semi-auto 2-speed
Axle/Gears: 3.73, 3.90, 4.88, 3.55, 3.54, 7.00
Also check out the rear. The torque arm can trasmit vibrations to the trans and make you think you have a transmission problem when the real culprit is the rear. Check for pinion slop, and make sure that it is easy to turn over by hand (pull the drums/discs and tires for this).

Definitely check the trans mount too.

It's not the transmission mount. I checked that when I was looking at the drive shaft. Also, I don't loose power like a slip.

In order to check the pinion slop, am I making sure the axle turns ok, or the driveline. Why do I have to take the rims and drums off to do this? I have never even herd of a servo before, but if it is that expensive to check out, I would like to exhaust all other possibilities.

Also, a friend of mine told me it could be the torque converter falling apart, is this a possibility? I find it hard to believe that the torque converter could make the whole car shutter.

Thanx for all the advice so far. If anyone has a million bucks I can borrow let me know.

You take the tires and drums off so that there is no additional drag on the rearend from the shoes/pads, or additional weight. Check for slop in the pinion by rocking the pinion side to side and seeing how much it turns before the axel starts to spin.

You better bet that a TC can make the whole car shake and shudder. This usually only happens when the converter clutch fails though, which would cause problems at highway speed when it wen to disengage, like when it tried to downshift from 4th to 3rd to pass, or when you step on the brake and it tries to decouple itself and let the trans freewheel.
