Will 28 spline axels work with this?!?

Ok, so I got a little antsy wanting a posi unit for my Camaro. I went on Ebay and got a good deal on an Original G80 RPO code unit. HOWEVER, it says that it's for 26 spline axels, which I first I thought I had, I thought Camaro's had 26 spline unless it was orginally a posi car. After a little research on here, getting pumped to have this installed and all, I've come to learn that 90-92 Camaro's had 28 spline axels....and I have a 1992 Camaro RS. So I guess my question is, what do I do? I don't think I can use this unit now, right?!? Would it be alright to go down to 26 spline axles? I really don't think I want to do that, since I plan on beefing up my engine over winter with some new mods. I don't want to say I screwed up, but I believe I did. I got it for two reasons, it be a posi unit for my car, and it's coming with 3.42's!

might want to look for a zexel torsen unit as those come with 28 splines and are fairly cheap when they pop up, can check on that ls1 site.

Which differential did you get? GM used the G80 code for many differentials, including the Eaton Posi, Traction Lock, Governor Lock, Auburn and Torsen. So which one did you get? You don't want to down grade to 26 spline axles, and there are a few of the differentials listed above that you do not want.

Well you bought yourself a nice door stop. Yours is a good case for NOT doing research on a subject.

Education: This is is a RPO G80 LIMITED SLIP (not the slang for one "Posi").

Re: Will 28 spline axels work with this?!?

I got the Governor Lock one, I've heard some not so great things about it too. I'll admit I don't know much about rearends, that's obvious. What can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again. Would anyone be able to recommend me a differential to put in my car? I don't really want to spend a ton of money, bought I realize you get what you pay for. I have a 10 bolt rear end stock, with 2.73 gears. Can I still have a professional put the 3.42 gears in my rear end? Thanks for the advise too!

Re: Will 28 spline axels work with this?!?

The Eaton Posi is the best for most applications. There is also the Duragrip, which is a Eaton copy for a lot less money. I've sold a truck load of the Eaton units and a few of the Duragrips and they all work great. I'm tresting a 9 inch Ford Duragrip in my car right now, and so far I haven't been able to break it. These are clutch type differentials that are rebuildable and can be tuned for racing if you need to do so.

Scrap the Governor Lock. It's no good for what you want to do. I also don't recommend the Auburn for several reasons. You can use the 3.42 on one of the differentials that I listed above.

If the guy that you bought the Governor Lock from was advertising it as a Eaton Posi then make him take it back because he advertised it wrong. There is a huge difference between the Eaton Posi and the Eaton Governor Lock.

Hey, thanks for the advise @big gear head! You certainly know what you're talking about. I now plan on trying to resell the one I bought from Ebay for cheap, just to recoup some of my money. Unfortunately the seller accurately described the unit, I'm just stupid and thought I had 26 spline axles for some reason when I have 28. I'm definitely going with a Eaton Posi now!

Re: Will 28 spline axels work with this?!?

If all your going to need is the gears and Eaton Posi. than that will save you some money on the axles. I payed $125.00 a piece for mine but I needed the 28 spline . Any way here's some photos of my 10 bolt upgrade including a Eaton 28 spline posi, new 28 spline axles ,3.42 ring and pinion and LPW Ultimate cover. Here's a link to the Eaton posi unit. = http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/Produc...iteId=EatonCom and here's a link for the LPW cover.= http://www.lpwracing.com/p_capcovers.asp You must scroll down the page to see the 10 bolt cover. I strongly recommend the Eaton and the 3.42 gears. The car feels sooo much better than my old 2.73's. and open rear. Night and day difference.

$700.00 for axles and installation parts and labor including 3.42 ring and pinion ,$535.00 Eaton Posi.,$169.00 LPW Ultimate support cover.. 3 year warranty. Total = $1,404.00.
