2.73 to 3.42 need some wisdom!! PLEASE!
Alright so I'm thinking of buying this 85 camaro rear end with a 3.42 POSI with disk brakes for $300 for my 90 camaro. I was wondering if I would run into any problems swapping mine out and throwing this one in. Would everything bolt up right? How could I check if the rear end is good? Any help would be nice. Thanks

Bolts right up.
You check it for being good, by LOOKING at the parts. If it's good, put new fluid back in, it needs it anyway.
The posi in those is an Auburn. Pretty lame, but I guess not as bad as a Gov-Lock. It's usually worn out within 8 - 10 years of normal driving. Don't expect much. It's not rebuildable; when it wears out, into the trash it goes.
It will have the Delco-Moraine brakes. They suck. Alot of people report that they can put their car on jack stands, drop it in gear, and the brakes cannot stop the wheels even at idle. However, if you get "new" calipers, install the GM "recall kit" in them (who knows why the rebuilders don't put that in them), and do the combo valve mod, they can work MUCH better; and of course, make sure you use the parking brake EVERY TIME you get out of the car, and twice on Sundays, because that's THE ONLY thing that keeps them adjusted up.

You'll also need to swap speedo gears for your speedo to read correctly - you'll neeed to replace both the drive gear and the driven gear - one is in the speedo housing on the tailshaft of the tranny (easy to swap), other is on the actual tranny spline inside the tailshaft housing (a bit more difficult).

So would it be wroth it to grad this rear and do some work to it? Or should i just save a little more money and swap a 3.73 posi with the rear I already have?

Since no one in his right mind would swap Delco-Moraines for PBR's, you no doubt have drums. That said, for the best brake performance, you'll need to swap the combination valve as well.

If it's still in the donor car and you are able to drive and listen to it, that'd be even better and i know IMO i'd be more inclined towards a purchase.
Aren't 4th gen rears going for 3 or 4 hundred these days? Better differential, "stronger" axles, better brakes, but you gotta deal with the offset...

I replaced my drive and driven gear and was a pia. I found out the drive gear can be left in place, and make up for it with a different driven gear. I believe I found the info here:http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm
I did the same replacement from 2.73, to 3.42

Yup I did not change the drive gear on the driven gear. with a 26 inch tire which is a 215/65/15 or 235/60/15. I had to run a 45toothe driven gear which is light blue. With the stock drive gear which is green I cannot remember the teethe on that.
