'85 IROC 1-2 shift.

I recently purchased and '85 IROC. LB9/700R4/3.42 non-posi. It came with some muds and snow Yokohamas which are very traction limited.

Anyways, at full throttle, the 1-2 shift usually exceeds 6000 rpm, with the sensation that the engine is freewheeling for a second, almost as if there is some slippage. Now, the Yokohamas have no traction, (in fact, don't even squeal), so I'm wondering if I'm experiencing tire spin at that moment. I also get that "freewheeling/slipping" sensation on very agressive downshifts.

BTW, I've adjusted the TV cable in the normal manner.

Any thoughts?

Re: '85 IROC 1-2 shift.

if it is factory, the tv cable could very well be stretched making "normal" adjustment just about impossible. may need to make little adjustments to get it set correctly. i usually use the lever on the side of the throttle body to set mine instead of using the gas pedal.

Well, definitely not tire spin. Now it does at even light throttle. It's like it doesn't want to upshift.

Re: '85 IROC 1-2 shift.

Did you find a solution to this problem, i have a 92 rs that I'm gonna experiencing this with... if i put my foot in it it wont shift to 2ndsecond till 5500 -6000 and i have let off the pedal... but when i start out slow then it will shift at 3500-4000.. but also when I'm gonna at highway speed 70 or so it wont stay in 4ththe it will constantly downshift at the slight let off of the pedal... i took it to a tranny shop and they told me it needs rebuilt... is there anything i can try to help improve my current tranny

Honestly, I've been really busy and haven't had time to look into it. Yours sounds like it's doing the same though.

But generally speaking, my first hand experience is, that no matter what tranny problem you have, 99% of the trans shops you go to, will say you need a rebuild.

Based on Cerberus's experience with his car, I think it's the governor gear.

Re: '85 IROC 1-2 shift.

Yea, I figure that the tranny shop would say that but I guess if they have to open it up they might as well do a rebuild, I just don't see how they justify charging $1200-1400 for it when the rebuild kit is $150.00.

How hard is the governor gear to replace? I can work on the cars but I usually try to stay away from the transmission unless it's changing the tail shaft seal.

I did find a guy that would sell me a 700r4 from a 91 2wd pickup with 91k miles that he hit a deer with the truck for $150.00 but I'm not 100% sure that would work.

thanks for your response. I usually can't get anyone to respond to any of my posts so I have to end up figuring it out myself

Re: '85 IROC 1-2 shift.

I had an 87 iroc with the same problem. I had a broken accumulator spring. Fortunatly that spring was taken out while installing a shift kit.

Re: '85 IROC 1-2 shift.

Update: Trans is getting rebuilt. Pan was full of clutch material and other bits. My low miles "creampuff" has apparently seen some hard use and lots of high RPM, full throttle, manual shifting.

First, seems like a broken 1-2 accumulator spring. Very common. But second, this points toward slippage instead.

Would work just fine if you just swap the tailhousings and shifter brackets. May need to swap TV cables also.
