Exhaust should be first with a high flow cat. then id do power pullys i noticed a nice difference in power with them and it made my gas milage better i went from 220 miles per tank to over 300 per tank thats city driving. Then get a MSD coil and MSD 6A, Then throw in a chip, Oh a Cold air intake should be first not the exhaust.

well, you can make a 2.8L go fast, but it's gonna take time and money, both of those are two things that many people aren't willing to spend. You can create horsepower with bolt on modifications, but the big ponies are locked away within the motor. The first thing to do is a major tune up, TomP has a tech article on how to perform this and what all needs to be changed. Then you can think of doing a K&N Filter with Cold Air, next i'd follow with a complete exaust system, (it can be pieced together however, think a Hi-Flow Catalytic Converter, maybe a 2.5 or so In. Intermediate pipe, then follow that up with your choice of muffler, dynomax or flowmaster (both are nice, but those will get your panties in a ruffle if you discuss them to much...everyone's torn between them). After exaust, go with some underdrive pullies, and then onto the ignition. MSD6A/L, MSD Super Coil, and a set of 8.0MM or 8.8MM wires, after all that's done i'd recommend going inside. Go with a double roller timing chain and a crane Compu-cam 2030. That'll improve the engines performance a lot by increasing the ammount of air you can get in and how much exaust can go out that now freeflowing exaust system. Do a set of roller rockers, valve job on the heads, if you're doing a complete rebiuild, do all of this, plus go with a higher compression piston setup, say 10:1 or so. With all of that you'll be moving nice, a set of 3.73 gears outback wouldn't hurt either, to firm up your shifts and make the car feel like it's a haus even if it isnt, think of doing a vette servo, aftermarket boost valve to increase line pressure and a shift kit (transgo or B&M, but many say transgo). Then tkaeh er to the track and see how you run, if all else fails and the previous stuff is done, add a 75hp shot of Nitrous Oxide, maybe 100 shot if you're feeling daring, and then run 13's. eh...maybe 14's . :P

I hate to be an ****, but go with the 3.4L Swap....
My 3.1L 92 RS Auto is leaps and bounds better than my old 2.8L 84SC 5-speed....I'd even go so far as to say that the 3.1L and definatly the 3.4L V6s (with very few cheap & easy mods) give the 305 V8 TBIs a good run for there money.....

Doesn't quite sound like she's proud to own a Chevy with six earth shaking cylinders, but hey, whatever.
And how do you want the car to be fast? Top speed? 1/4 mile? 0-60? Fast around sharp turns without slowing down?

Hey another girl here...Hi all
My 1/4 time this weekend were crap, Total crap. 20.54 (1/4 mile) was the best the car could do. 1987 2.8L MPFI Firebird automatic, 140,000 miles. We checked everything. All the usual suspects are new or read fine (fuel, timing, ignition, new computer, exhaust...etc)
Our suspect is the cam. Its original and we think it is wearing big time. Going to get an oil analysis done, but anyway, nuff excuses.
Well that said. If to have a 2.8 that is running perfect and you have done the following mods, what range should it run in (1/4 mile)?
Cold/Ram air induction
Smoothed and coated exhaust manifolds
2.5 high flow cat
Flowmaster exhaust
MSD coil
ACDelco rapid fire plugs
Taylor 8mm wires
T/B Bypass
EGR blocked off
Beefed suspension
Subframe connectors
17in rims, but the tires are the same overall diameter as stock.
I have done no weight reduction and it has subs in the back.

20.54 - fresh kickin V6 do better. you've done good work in appearance so i'm sure you'll do the same in performance tuning. keep up the good work.
heavy car with 2.8 wont never fly. with turbo it will hit 350 TPI level, but driveability will be different.
3.4 w/ turbo and 5-speed manual, i'll trade that one to GTA anyday

Yeh, there was a guy on the board who was from my home town actually was running 15.9, all motor on a 3.1L v6. granted he started with 5 more hp, and about 15lbs/tq extra over the 2.8L, that shouldn't be to hard to accomplish with these little motors. Just takes the two magic words........time and money.

I don't want to know how fast my 2.8 can go. I want to know if it will last long enough till I can afford to get my huge V8 crate engine
