engien problems found out not where we thought it was

well this is cammy agin, my name is auchely brian.

i was working on my car in school to fix what i thought was a bad push rod or rocker arm. i found out to day it's not on the left bank like i thought it was i havent see the right bank yet but i will of by tommrow. if it's not that what do u think it could be ill tell u the syptoms.

1.starts hard but starts with foot on the gas (mpfi)

2.sounds like it's power pushing(some what lugs and shakes the car)

3.if u put it up at around 2,500RPM's it runs like normal or to fast for it to be herd

4.take your foot off the gass it runs about 2,000rpm's then 1,000rpm's then jumps around with in 500rpm's then dies

the car shakes and starts hard the only new changes done sence iv owned it are K&N air filter new clutch oil change new tranny fluid all of those have been done at least once but all were done 1 1/2 week's before it started acting up. the night before the check engien light came on and it died twice. the next night i had jut put gas in it and it died and i pulled it out of gear because i could tell it wasent getting gas or somthing, turned off the main road to a side street put it in 2nd doing about 20mph let out the clutch and put on the gass it started back up and ran like **** for about 2 bloks and died and i costed in to a parking space that's the last time it drove under it's owne power.

one outher thing if it comes down to changing the pistion or taking off the head would it be worth pulling it my self doing all the work and replacing ever thing on it or just getting a V-8. now i know that i can get around 500HP out of the 3.1v-6 with spend a lot of monney with a V-8 it's cheaper to get new engien and all what do u think please help.

thanks cammy

P.S. cammy is what i named my car sence the day i got it

Well.. for starters, you said you got a check engine light? Pulling the valve covers is probably an exercise in futility. Your problem is 95% likely to be in the fuel injection system. The 60* V6's aren't exactly prime candidates for mechanical failure.

Pick up a haynes manual. It describes the proceedures for reading the codes from the computer and has a list of what the codes mean. If you get a code 32, ignore it. Almost all of us pop code 32.. to my knowledge there is still no replacement EGR valve available to stop that code from popping.

There are many failure points on the electrical side that could cause this, ranging from the fuel pump to the ignition coil, but we'll delve that way once you've read the codes. Also, do a search to see what other members have had similar problems and how they've fixed them. Stick to the V6 boards for engine tech. The V8 guys get cranky when the V6 people invade their turf. Besides, the V6 boards will have far more accurate info for your motor.

And btw, it's cheaper to get a new car than to swap an 8 into the 6, and 500hp out of a 3.1 is definitely not realistic.. I've got specs for a fully tuned naturally aspirated small block 427 street motor operating in excess of 100% volumetric efficiency that produces just under 500 in a street-legal configuration.. it'd be insane to think such numbers out of an engine less than half the size realistic (Can you? Yes. Will you? I'll bet a fleet of third-gens against it. I've heard it over and over, and I think there's 2 60* V6 owners on these boards that have proven over 200hp). FYI =)

lol

thanks for the help and ur right in a street leagel way it would be under 500HP to my knolage but i mean the works look at nascar there runn i think 600HP out of V-6 anny thing is possible but for starters i was going to put thease modifachtions on it. all most all custom parts from viarious places

1.3/4 inch durchtion cam
2.custom desined supercharger
3.bigger fule injectors
4.(one of my owne desines not full tested yet)extra fuleinjector in the intake manifolde(sorta like nos just gas allweys running with the flip of a switch)
5.roller style valavetrain
6.costom desined blower pistons
7. 0 gap rings
8. 3 core ratiator
9. oil cooler
10. custom desined cylender head to add about 10cubic inch
11.holly hilbourn air scoop ( mesured it fits 2inches out of my hood) if i had it all redy lol
12.reprogramed the coumputer to inject more fule
13. no cat no muffler, side pipes 3inch
14. exaust headers
15. new billet steal crank shaft
16. billet steal connecting rods
17. K&N air filter
18. new fule pump
19. new 3 fan set up
20. new balanced flyweel
21. 12 inch clutch
22. nitto 555 ultra hight proformance tiers
23. a high boost pully to get the most out of the supercharger
24. the worst one the price of over 15,000$ for an estmate of 600HP

now that is a lot of cash and ur right it's not streat leagle in just about anny way it would never pass emissions or leagle sound limit and i could sell it and get one with a V-8 but im not going to find one that is in as good of condichtion as mine and sence it's a 92 im sure u know it's a 25th annuvirsey car. i mainely want it as a weekend and showe room car but i still dragrac with it.

and a 427 only getting a lil under 500hp is out ragous if u ask me with supercharger and all u could push at least 800HP out of it look at the monster turcks. but like u said streat leagle. where i live thay dont care as long as u dont use it in town for the sound thay dont care untill u rev it up a lil for the ileagel drag racing that gose on in this lil town. thay have a lincon felter Z06 thats been modifyed like i wouldent beleave. what we know as it's the ***** cat of cop cars because a lot of cars around here hit well over 170mph in a haf mile the top speed on the cops camaro or well what we have found out it is about 160mph. but thay also have a plane and helecptor because of all the racing that happens it's sorta like tha fast and the furious

wether or not u beleave me i mean it is happening and for the modifachtions on the V-6 the price would be better off with a V-8 wouldent it to supe up a MPFI V-6 or a carburated V-8 i think teh V-8 is cheaper isent it and also easyer to get HP out of

Cammy,

PLEASE read what you are typing BEFORE hitting the "Submit Reply" button. I had a heck of a time trying to even see what you were saying. We are all willing to help and can allow some errors from people who do not speak English as their primary language. However, the jibberish above is almost un readable and I am sure many others feel the same way.

I hate to criticize...but..how in the hell do you plan to pull all of that off? You can't just custom fab up engine components in your garage with a power saw, a dremel tool, some sheet metal, and some duct tape.. Fabbing PARTS is extremely difficult and expensive. A supercharger for a V6? ALREADY-MANUFACTURED versions can go past $2500-$3000! Custom fabbed? I'd guess $6000, possibly more! Hell, for $6000 you can get one mean crate motor. Custom designed heads?? Good luck! That's another couple thousand.. The costs here are exponential... Not to mention, I believe there IS someone out there that successfully turbocharged a one of these motors. Not only did he spend a fortune, and you'd be doing even MORE work than he did, but he was very unsatisfied because he found that even with a turbo, this motor just refuses to push power. Point being....save up your money...take $12,000 or so and grab you a crate motor..I believe they sell them pushing over 800 hp out of the box for that price. Drive off satisfied and turning heads, with extra money in your pocket and 1/15th the problems you'd have doing the V6 soup-up.

lol.. No...I think if he wanted something like The Fast and The Furious, the mod list would be:

*Euro Tails custom fabbed out of sheet metal and aluminum foil
*Sheet metal 8 ft by 4 ft wing
*Custom HID conversion-Halogen bulbs surrounded by pieces of angle cut mirror
*Radical Maaco two-tone paintjob with Vinyl 'TURBO' decals on the doors
*18 in. chrome-painted hubcaps
*Film container with NOS sticker and silicone hose tapped into intake
*Fire extinguisher with braided fuel lines run into engine bay
*5 in. chrome-plated tip on a 2 in. exhaust system
*Neon shift ****
*NOS floor mats and seat covers
*Ja Rule CD in $70 Pioneer player with Walmart subs in the back and a used 100 watt x 2 channel amp spraypainted chrome

Cammy...check this flyer out for an idea or two... I picked it up at the All Chevy drag show at the Moroso Motorsports Park last year in Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Re: lol

Cammy, as to some of the parts on your list:

I've been waiting over 7 years to see someone supercharge a 2.8/3.1; no offense. Millions of people say they'll do it, or they'll turbocharge the 2.8/3.1, and none have done it. If you can do it, you'll be the first ever- and become instantly famous if you can provide pictures and other details to prove it to us.

As to the extra fuel injector idea, 85-89 2.8's intake manifolds already have this, and use it for cold starting. 90-92 3.1's don't use it. It seems like a good way to blow your intake manifold off the car. If by "nos" you mean nitrous oxide (NOS is a manufacturer of nitrous oxide,), then you might think that N2O (nitrous oxide) is a fuel. It's not. It provides two things- extra oxygen, and a cooling effect to the cylinder. N2O doesn't burn. NOS stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems. It doesn't stand for nitrous oxide, just figured I'd tell you to save you future embarassment!

15. new billet steal crank shaft
16. billet steal connecting rods

Do you really want to have someone custom make a billet steel crank and rods for a 3.1?!? Wow; that's a ton of cash...

19. new 3 fan set up
Seems like one larger fan would do the job just as well.

I honestly don't think you'll ever get your 15,000 worth. You'll be ruining the 25th anniversary car's status anyway with all those mods to the engine; might as well drop a v8 in. Plenty of people take old classic cars and put new motors in.

ONLY getting a little under 500 HP??? You're joking, right? Search google.com for volumetric efficiency and naturally aspirated.

LOL, Nixon1!! Hey, you sure you mean Pioneer? I heard SparkOMatic was making a comeback! Nuthin' thumps like a Pyramid amp blasting out of Legacy subs! (And we're all thankful for that!)

Oh and cammy, you might want to take your street address out of your profile. It's not safe to give out your home address over the net, especially with places like http://www.mapsonus.com and evil people around!

Way to spell it all out Tom. Oh and the idea of using the extra injector in the intake manifold for extra power...there won't be any. You'll just wet up the inside of your manifold and run rich. There isn't any extra power in more fuel. There's extra power in more fuel AND air. As to what Tom said about the nitrous....nitrous carries a sh*tload of oxygen in with it, that's how it makes the power it does, but you gotta richen up your mixture from the factory settings otherwise when you hit it, you run extreme lean and burn your engine up. Retarding the timing is a good idea too..running advanced timing on nitrous is a great way to cause detonation. I suspect detonation is what blew the rings in my #8 cylinder. It's the only cylinder that isn't 155-160 psi in compression..it's down to 125.

Hey, same thing happened to me; ran with overadvanced timing for a long time, never realized it. Blew the #1 spark plug to pieces; there was just a ground strap, no center! So I think it chewed the hell outta my #1 cyilnder's ring; I get the same PSI readings as you do... 140-160 on cylinders 2-6, about 120 psi on cylinder #1.

Yeah...when I checked the timing on my car it was well over specs...although I don't believe my timing light, which said 18...should've pinged like hell but didn't. But I suspect a blown ring from nitrous only because all the rest of the pistons are fine, and the car was run on nitrous previously...the horns were the activation switch and it has a safety flip-cover switch on the passenger side of the shifter plate.

well ur right it wouldent be all about being a 25th annuvisery. but if it's a show car it adds to it dont u think. well eather way ur right that list of my is way out there i was just makin a point with what would be better putting that all that in the V-6, or just get a V-8. i will end up proebely getting a V-8 sence that is cheaper power. i supose you are right about the hole extra injectore, i would nead more air for it to do good. and for the 3 fan set up it would just be fore looks and custom desine if i did do it. i proebely wont end up doing it, it was just a good thought for show. for the billet steal it would cost a lot if my uncle dident have the mechein shop to do it and the molds. i have an advantage to a lot of stuff like 100's of old ratiors for if i get a V-8.
also i can get a 327 for about 200$ it runs just has 112,00miles. or i can get a 350 with a 4bolt main that has 34,000 miles on it.

like i said the V-6 parts list and the 15,000$ was just to say hay it would be cheaper to get a V-8 wouldent it. for the picture of a super charger and a turbo charger on a 3.1V-6 iv see the twin turbo on a 3.1v-6, if i can find it agin ill post it up here well i got to go.
