Short and long?

What is the difference between a short and long block? I can lay my hands on a 3.1L ---> 3.4L short or long and was woundering if one has an advantage over the other?

A short block has the crank , rods , cam , pistons , block .

A long block includes the oil pan , starter , intake fuel inectors .
the long block does not include the accesories , ex : ac , power steering , altenator

No. A shortblock is the rotating assembly, block (of course), timing set, and usually the oil pump. In short (no pun intended) it's the complete bottom end of the engine.

A long block includes the heads and valvetrain.

A starter does not come with the longblock and in most cases the oil pan and valvecovers are also not included.

A crate engine usually includes everything less carb and starter.

Excellent, Wayne.
BUT SOMETIMES ASK, they may include what ya ask for at a good price, too!
IT is less work for them to leave it on than remove.

Pardon me I thought the crank did rotate ? Last time I drove my car mine did .

I have never seen a LONG BLOCK in my life without the valve covers . Not saying they don't exist .Im sure they do , Im just saying you can get them with the valvecovers . I have never seen one without the oilpan either .

WTF? You don't need to get smart with me, I've been working on cars since before you were a gleam in your daddy's eye. Why become a smartass when you should be proving your arguement?

If you go back and read my reply you'll see I stated a shortblock comes with the rotating assembly and that it is basicly a complete bottom end. Last time I looked the crank was in the bottom end, at least mine is. I have never seen a longblock come with a starter and the only ones I know of that come with new tin are GM remans or crates. Now show me a "longblock" that comes with the injectors and everything else you stated.

You do that, I'll go get pictures of my blazer. Or is that the best you can do? Get real, mommy's and daddy's cars?

Note to Billy: You can edit this part since I'm sure he saw it before you.
Just for the added flame value: Wayne, I am now convinced. The best part of you ran down you mothers leg.
