Ratchet Shifter?!?!?
I know B&M makes a console version for Thirdgens but I've hear alot of greif about it. So what are other recomendations and how difficult was the install...I know I've seen Hurst V-Matic but no details on how hard the install was...What about some other B&M ones like the Z-Gate or Star Shifter?

Everyone trashes the B&M, Ive had it for 3 years and the only problems Ive had is with the handle, cheesy chrome wears off, and after a couple hundred shifts the handle wont stay tight.

Yup. I've had mine for 4 years and never had any issues with it. Installation wasn't even that bad.

I have the B&M mega shifter for our cars as well. I like it and have had no problems with it. That plus it is made to look like a factory install.

Ive had the b&m for a year. Looks great...lots of fun to shift and there were only two annoying parts to the install but they werent hard. the first was the cutting of the factory counsel...not hard but annoying becuase B&M could have supplied somthing to make it easier. And the wiring for the reverse lights and stuff....just had to cut and extend the wires to the conectors on the shifter. B&M could have just made a harness to plug into, but once again it wasnt hard just could have been easier. In my opinion the Megashifter is the best for the price. I love the Hurst Dual gate but its a little to expensive. Hope this helps

For the B&M I have heard about using factory cables and using supplied ones...Either way is it hard and what is involved

I love my B&M feelin lazy put it in drive and go feelin frisky slap that bi**h around E-Z install I used the supplied cable a little long but E-Zer than cutting the old one and yes B&M should have thought about the wireing a little better but oh well for the money defianetly quality Also use some locktight on the handel or youll strip it or be tighting it every few days.....

Here's the details about the V-Matic 2
You'll the to fabricate spacers to mount it on the old shifter plate. That does not require drilling holes in the floor.
I used 1/8 aluminium to make the top plate, it's really easy, but need a jigsaw and the mesurements.
The wiring is pretty straight foward, the switch is locate on the front right side and it has 4 prongs. 1 for neutral switch, 1 for backing light, 1 ground and 1 that I don't remember
The shifter cable is heavy duty but too long , you'll need to make a clip so it doesn't get wrapped around the drive shaft.
I never had any problem with it, that thing is really well made, not any cheap metal used. will not flake since the handle is made with polished aluminum.
You can even use ArmorAll on the shift boot , doesn't affect it at all.

I installed a Z-gate shifter into 4 cars I've owned, and so far the 1 and only complaint I've had was when I put one in my '67 cougar, when ever I put the lever into park the car would have to roll backward an inch or two before "park" would engadge in the C4.
I've installed a Z-gate in three GM's (an '81 Blazer TH350, a '73 Formula Firebird TH400, and my '70 Skylark TH350.) and I've never had any problems with them.
All in all the Z-Gate is a GREAT shifter for the price.
