AFR best place to buy

Sorry to bother you guys. Did a search on AFR (obviously didn't do it right) and didn't have any luck with the search.

Who sells the AFR heads? Do you buy direct from AFR? Are most of you running the 190's? I'm going to have a 355 with 9.75 compression and trying to model after the setup on their website.

Thanks,
Craig

I bought mine directly from AFR, I hope that you are patient because it takes about four weeks to get your heads. Make sure to tell them all of the detais about your engine, they make the heads based on what you tell them you need. I bought the 190cc heads which are emission legal and a good match for a TPI.

I recommend calling AFR to get the details of what you need, then calling Thunder Racing to order the heads. Why? Because Thunder Racing sponsors us and I'd like them to keep doing so .

I'm in the process of ordering my AFR heads right now. And, of course, I'm ordering through Thunder Racing.

I'm going with the 190's and the 68cc chambers. The 195's require material to be added to any intake in order to match the head size. The difference in performance is minimal.

More important is the compression ratio. These are aluminum heads and need a good point higher comp ratio then iron heads.

Depending on my head gasket I'll be around 10.25:1.

sbrice18fan ... What part number did you order to fit with the SLP 1 3/4 headers? Any problem with plug clearance?
thanks in advance.

When they say that the heads are emissions legal, does that mean EGR, etc., i am in California where this stuff really matters and would like to know. THANK YOU

Yes they are smog legal in CA (central coast baby!!!!) and have a heat riser cast into the head that alows the heat gases to pass into the manifold or base. Then the EGR mod. releases the gasses into the manifold or plenum.

With out heat risers you would need to get the exhaust gases from the headers or exh manifold like the corvettes do. That can be passed off as smog legal since that type of EGR set up was availible in that year.

AFR # 1022 is a 190 head with 68 CC cumbustion chamber and L98 angled plug that will work with SLP's and with a flat top piston decked at -.005 -.020 you should be able to get 10.1:1- 10.5:1 depending on the head gasket. Just watch the quelch area. Remember EFI can handle up to 11.1:1 (Lingenfelter)on 92 pump gas.

Thanks for the replies! I talked to AFR today and will go with the 190's in 74cc chamber and have them milled to 64cc to keep my cr around 10. He said the 74cc chamber was a better design than the 68 and will do better when milled.

I'd like to hear what you guys are doing (have done) with your engines, but might be getting off topic here. You can send me an email.

Here's my set-up as of now (subject to change)
Lower:
350 block bored .030 over
Scat 9000 crank
KB 231 pistons?
Clevite 77 brgs 'H' series
Moroso blue-printed oil pump?
Upper:
AFR 190 heads milled to 64cc
Edelbrock Performer RPM
Comp Cams XE274
1.6 roller rockers
Comp Cams timing chain
and a few things I'll keep to myself
Trying to pattern after the AFR 355 on their website.

Send me an email,
Craig

P.S. Does Thunderracing offer thirdgen.org member discounts?, same price as AFR?

I don't know what pistons those are. Where do your pistons sit at TDC? How low in the hole are they? For comparission purposes, flat tops with AFR suggested gaskets (felpro 1003) will get you 10.049:1 @ .025 in the hole.

Also how much will they have to mill off to get to 64cc? I would check to see if your intake manifold will still meet the head ports correctly.
