Best Heads For Superram

Looking to get some new heads to replace my ported L98 iron heads. ( casting 083 ) 64cc 1.94 1.50

My cam has not been ordered yet but im building a 355 up and looking for 375- 400hp.

What should i look for as far as valve size, intake runner size and so on. .

400 crank or 400rwhp?
You can get 400crank hp with ported L98 aluminum's...not a real thich deck as they are stock heads but if you stay N/A they would hold up fine..maybe even a small shot of nitrous. If you want more down the road AFR's are good heads,you will pay some $$ for them but the cylinder head is where you want to spend the big $$$. Depends on your budget really....Superram set-ups usually make the peak power in the mid -upper 5k range...you don't need a massive port cylinder head,as the superream is still considered a long tube runner set-up,and favors low/mid range velocity. Decide what cam you want first...look at the lift numbers and choose a head that flows best in that cams range. That will determine your runner size. Intake also determines runner size but you have that picked already. 210 cc heads flow great @.600 lift but if your cam has only.500 lift it is useless. I remeber not to long ago people would put heads on TPI set-ups that would flow amazing numbers yet was useless as the cam being used never got to the lift that the heads really shined at. Valve size 2.02/1.56 is good.

400 crank is fine, ill have my 150 shot if its not enough for me.

It just needs to be streetable.

I used aluminum L98's from scoggin dickeys with 2.02/1.60 valves on my superramed 383 and drivability is perfect.

I found some for $1000 unported though PAW . A bit expensive for stock vette heads if you ask me.

When I did some research on them I found those were really not worth it. Ok for a stock/mild car.

Biggest problem with 113 heads were the guides and seats falling out.

Get some Trickflows and call it a day..

What was the original design useage by Lingenfelter?
Ported L98's? Or around 180cc's.
Any 195cc head will have sufficient volume. And allow for feature creep later. Ideally, AFR 180's on a 355 for 5800 ish max.
But the 195's allow for more rpm later or a 3.75 crank.

I had AFR 195's on my car 2 years ago. Ran great after 4 grand, no low end what so ever and that's on a 383. Also the idle was terrible. Lingenfelter said they are too big. I wouldn't go any bigger than 180 AFR's or just port some L98's. I got mine from SDPC for like $830 shipped but that was a long time ago. I did have to port mine and get the bigger valves and guideplates but the car runs so smooth and havent had any problems with anything. Except keeping my foot out of it.

What is the stock L98 intake port size? 160cc?? What do they flow?

Go with a TFS head. Good quality and flow for less than the AFR's. You do not have to wait for them either like the AFR's. If you port the TFS's, you can only get better results. When I ported my TFS's I was able to open the exhaust port way up. It now fits nicely with my hooker long tubes.

I called PAW and they suggested that i go with World Products
Sportsman II cast iron heads with 200cc intake, 64cc comb.
Run about $900

Are these any good ?

Get the trickflows for that kind of money. The darts need porting to flow well. Get the LPE219 cam or something in the 218-224 intake duration range with decent lift and you will be happy as long as you have some headers, stall and gear.

I'm in the power range you are looking for. I'm running Trickflow heads with a smaller cam. It's a ZZ9 with 212 on the intake side. With the Mufflex exhaust system, the electric water pump, conversions to speed density and a good tune I should be close to the 400HP mark at the crank.

The key to power is a set of good flowing heads, a first class exhaust system and a good intake system. If you have these you will make good power. Don't get me wrong you still need a decent cam but it does not have to be big on duration. If you have a poor set of heads and a huge cam you are not going to make good power.

By the way if you get the standard dual spring Trickflow heads and take them to a head porter for say $350-$400 you will have some very good flowing heads. Probably still cheaper than AFR's but with much better flow. One set here locally came back with 280CFM on the intake and around 200 on the exhaust. Maybe a little more as I don't remember the exact details.

I will be going to the CompCams 268XFI HR13 cam in my next go around after the first of the year. I will also take my Trickflow heads in at that time to be ported. See my signature for future mods.

i have been doing research on heads for about the past 4 months looking for a set for my 355....the best flowing head for the money that i came up with has been the DART IRON EAGLE PLATINUM 200CC the flow numbers on these heads are awsome look.THESE ARE ACTUAL FLOW NUMBERS DONE BY STAN WEISS,

For the most part Stan Weiss gets the flow numbers from the manufacturors web site. He himself has not done the flow numbers. Read through the beginning of the web site and he will list the sources for his flow numbers. Buyer beware.

With aluminum heads you can run more compression, run a cooler engine and lose weight. I have never seen Iron eagles with flow results like that. What you need to do is look at the information super chevy or car craft comes up with when they compare several heads on the same flow bench.

If money is no object then AFR definately!!! I love mine so far....but if it is then Edelbrock, Trickflow or ported L98's would be fine too.

To be honest, for a street car, even currrent aluminum heads are not really required. (when comparing similar flow cfm's)
They are pricy, but you do have the opportunity to brag about 'em with the boys.
