What intake should I buy, from where, & how much $$ ??
I keep looking into all the different aftermarket intakes for the TPI cars and they all look decent, but I can't find any places to get them...at least not reasonably. Are they all discontinued or smoething?? People want an arm & leg!!
So here's what I'd like to know...
1. What intake setup can I buy for my 92 305 that won't have any hood clearance issues AT ALL?
2. Where can I get it?
3. Do you have an exact part number?
I like the HSR, but I don't want to have to hack ANYTHING on my hood, so that's probably out. Next issue is I really don't want to spend $600+ for a damn intake...seems insane to me. Why did all the intakes go for $350-450, then skyrocket?? Isn't anyone realistic anymore?
I'd love to find one here on the classifieds but it's a crap chute...by the time you see one it's already been sold 50x over. It's ridiculous.

HSR will not have clearance issues in a camaro.
Only the Birds have slight clearance issues.

Not always true. If you leave the original motor mounts in the car, you will likely not have any clearance issues at all. I put poly mounts in my 92 RS and there was no way the hood was going to close without hacking the support structures on the bottom of the hood.

My HSR barely fits under my hood with stock motor mounts.

There is a BIG difference between 'hacking' a hood for clearance, and properly trimming a hood for HSR clearance. Most people don't even notice the trimmed area on my hood and when I point it out most say 'that's all you had to trim?'
Of course, I have a Camaro; can't relate to the Firebird's issues.

If you want a complete intake system like FIRST ACCEL ect... are super expensive. HSR is your best bet on cost, but yeah theres that little thing called hood clearance. You could buy another hood if you're afraid of ruining the original one or something.
Your other option could be SLP runners or Siamese runners, port pleneum and intake..dunno man we are all in the same boat. I figure its easiest to get the hsr and call it done. Thats what i did.

Depending on how much you plan to build the 305 or whether or not there is a larger engine in the immediate future, for a mildly modified 305, I'd port the stock intake and plenum go with a set of cast runners (SLP, Edelbrock, or Accel) that you could port. You don't need a high skill level to do the porting,, there are enough threads here that you should be able to get an idea if it is something you would want to take on.
I say this because if the current engine is in good tune and the TPI is working like it is supposed to, swapping to a HSR will change the power band of the engine and run harder from a kick,,, but even with the 5-speed might not be as quick in the quarter mile on the 305 as the ported TPI/SLP combination.

Re: What intake should I buy, from where, & how much $$ ??
I've got an accel intake, and some AS&M Runners(non cold start) laying around if your interested..... I'd let them go for 500 + shipping (you would not have to hack up your hood with this setup) and seperatly those 2 pieces are about a $1,000. It took me about a year to pick those 2 pieces up in the for sale section but my block i was planning to rebuild this spring is scrap and my buddy can get me a deal on a new l31 vortec motor because he works in the service garage of my local chevy dealer. My loss is your gain if you want the setup.

Take his offer. I recently bought a TPIS Big Mouth with SLP Runners. And of course I further siamesed the runners, slightly ported the base. Then sent them off for powder coat, and I must say the tpi is the best looking intake out there.
And if you want a street car, stick with tpi...

HSR is tall. I think it needs milled down 1/2 inch to be perfect.
If you want to do any intake swap its gonna cost you more than 500 to do it, no matter what way you go.
First may seem expensive at about 1000 bucks but that includes base/runners/throttlebody and i thought fuel rails. Thats a killer deal on a complete TPI setup that flows like it does.
