Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
Had this crap sitting in my closet for the last year. Getting tired of bumping into so I figure I will start working on it... especially after seeing this auction. Value is starting to look good on these!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/140739028783...#ht_500wt_1093
This stuff has oil blow by stains, the runners were painted horribly (paint inside and outside of the runners), Intake is nice but used, TB is dirty and old... and so on.
I pieced this setup over about 2 years or so... I am amazed I ended up find the runners to be honest. I got a great price on everything too!

I bought a Craftsman 1/4 sheet sander at the BX today for like 20 bucks. Progress pics will come!
Anyone have any suggestions for a paint/polish scheme or anything? This is my spare setup that will go on the car when I go to port the stuff on my car currently. I'll post pictures as I go along with before and after pictures. Should be a fun little project!
Feel free to subscribe, comment, make suggestions... Enjoy!

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
Well, I spent about 2 hours on the plenum today with the electric palm sander I bought. I have been using 60 grit... Here are some pictures of some progress.

Anyone have any tips for the runners? Or any tips to make this sanding any quicker? All the small pits in the casting are making this a huge PITA. I think I started with the worst cast of a superram ever...
If sanding is going to be this shitty, I may just clean the runners up with some steal wool and paint them.

The casting and machining on the superrams were not too great. Looking good so far

Thanks!
I know it doesn't look like I did too much, but here is a picture of what I started with.

And that was the smooth side...

polishing out those nasty casting put will take a while but nice gratification in the end. I wish I was fortunate to have a second superram Luck dog.

I actually plan on polishing this one and using it for display until I pull my good superram setup to get fully ported and welded and everything, but that isn't planned for another year or two when I am living in the states again.

not too bad, wish I had a better lid for mine. You can still get the billet one but I wish it wasn't all smooth

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
You can buy new stock cast lids from Jonarotz. He works for accel I believe and there is a bin full of lids and plenums he is trying to get rid of. He doesn't have the runners though, I already tried... I went through him to buy the new plenum for the setup that is on my car currently. Then I ended up piecing everything together for my spare setup, but I didn't have a lid, so I just bought one from him to complete it. He is a solid guy to go through and I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again!
I wouldn't mind a billet lid though, how much do those run?

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
Spent 2 hours on it yesterday, and an hour today. Still using the 1/4 sheet palm sander with 60 grit. It is looking much better. I need to work on a small section of it pictured, then I need to work on the area's next to the TB area by hand
Anyways, here are some updated pictures.

I don't envy you one bit. I went through the same thing a couple years ago and just ended up painting mine. That inside curve you have pictured was a nightmare to do by hand.

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
Very difficult to do it the way you are
Starting with 60...ouch.
What Id do is keep going then get some nice paint/powdercoat on it.
Better equiptment you have easier it is, can start with much finer grits and skip steps. Adds up....

Would you suggest using an orbital sander or something? I know the palm sander sucks!

It is a lot of work to get the casting smooth and polished. I found a lot of cigars and beer make it go better! I am glad I did it though, I really like the look.
The end results will be worth it. Hang in there.

Haha, won't be any time soon. I have a lot going on this year. I'll have some time when I get out of the military in 10 months...
And just so everyone knows, I haven't lost interest... I have just been swamped with car stuff.

I know this is a old post but was wondering if you still had this item and if you would be interested in selling it?

Rough cast aluminum is a real betch you really need some decent equiptment to make it come out right. Those are old porous castings youll be an old man before they look decent....lol but it can be done. Not discouraging you just....be patient!
Polished a superram awhile back I cannot imagine doing it by hand.
Finished the below last night
Item 221332764744 on the 'bay site

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
Just incase everyone thought I quit this project, I am here and that is not the case. I ended up deploying for 6 months, then have had a bunch of stuff go on... I was planning on getting out in January, but I got an assignment to England, figured since I had family there I might as well take it.
So since I have been stuck in the dorms and finding a place to work on it has been a PITA, I am going to wait until I get to England where I will be living off base and a bit more free to make noise with a sander and such.

Or you can send the sr to me lol, I wouldn't want to give it back though
The casting of the sr plenum I think is the worst casting I have ever seen. You just have to end up living with a bunch of pin holes all over. But the shine is nice.

Re: Bumped into my junk spare Superram setup today... Project!
If I end up with pinholes, I can deal with it... This isn't going to end up on my car, so it doesn't matter too much. I do need to downsize my collection after I picked up my Typhoon... I don't need 2 superrams sitting around, nor do I need to own 8 sets of wheels that aren't on my car... I have a huge list of stuff I need to sell, but it is hard from over the pacific... Lol
I'll be taking a bunch of stuff to England, so I can try to sell it when I get there and ship it back to the states or something. I will finish this though, so no worries there!
