Engine compartment paint time

Alright guys here's the deal.

I just finished the sage of my reto project of absolutley gutting my engine compartment of my 88 Iroc-z

All striped down to nothing but the bare metal.
My autobody shop set me up with a gallon of Dupont Reducer
and a gallon of enamel Primer.

He told me to clean everything with soap and water ten times and then dry it all down and make sure there is no residue left.
Then wipe the whole thinkg down with reducer.
Then i can go ahead and start to prime it.

Does any one eles have any comments , concerns or ideas that would help me out with this

Thanks

I just got my engine out a few weeks ago and as long as the weather hold up i plan on spraying the bay on saturday. All i did was take out as much as i could, sanded everything down and used an air gun to get the real hard crap out of the tight spots. After it was "cleaned" up, i taped everything off and started to spray the parts you would never see with a black rust-oleum. I'll then spray that with a rust-oleum clear. I already sprayed the rad. support, two fenders, and firewall with an automotive primer. I sanded that down and once again used the air gun and a wet rag to get off all of the particles. I got a two stage paint from my auto body shop with the color to match my exterior paint. It is the acctual paint mixed, and then the clear. This is so i do not have to mix any paint myself. All i have to do is spray it on there in steps. Well, that is how i am doing it since with my car being fuel injected, you'll barely see anything anyway. good luck with it

The reason i am doing it is because i basically take pride in my work! Have you checked out the "post engine pics" thread? Some of those engine bays are embarissing! They have all of this nice crap on the motors and then you look at the paint and you can not tell what color it is! That is pathetic. There would be no way in hell i could ever show people my car if it were like that. My engine could have been in and running by now, i would just like to have an overall nice project, thats all! Well, good luck man. Oh yeah, what color is your car. Mine is a 2000 PPG dark blue mettalic. You see it on some corvettes, not too many though. It is a chevy color and it is not the navy blue one, that has a purplish tint to it, that is why i did not go with that.

There is no way in HELL I would use enamel primer!!
I would degrease it then wash it down with prepsol/ wax & grease remover then prime it with a good 2pak primer/surfacer.
I hope he is going to spray it with a 2pak coz if he is going to use enamel FORGET IT.

Only if I had an engine left, then I could paint my engine bay.

Loads of cellulose (gunwash)thinners followed by panel wipe.you must absolutely make sure that every last speck of grease is gone.Take your time because the paint reacting and fisheying isn't good for your health.

I have been lucky to not have to paint my engine compartment because the guys who owned it before me kept the engine clean at all times so the compartment looks like new.

Yep, been there done that this August! Fellas, here's some advise! Remove EVERYTHING. Removing stuff decreases the stuff you have to tape. Taping takes much longer (and wastes more money) than just taking the stuff out. You'll end up with a much better job with no overspray, tape lines, etc. You can also take the time to wash and repaint everything you take out of the engine bay. Be sure to cover your whole car. Buying some drop cheap drop cloths from Lowes worked great for this. Overspray gets everywhere so prepare by doing an excellent job of taping. I used a 1 part PPG paint. Buy the proper primer for your paint. Mix the hardner and catilyst in correct proportions. You can literally do a great engine bay paint job in your driveway if you take your time and do it right!

I also wanted to add...
I bought a half gallon of paint (2 qts) and only ended up using about 2/3 quart!

When it comes time to pull out my motor I plan on doing the same thing. I would use a base coat clear coat method. Put 3-5 coats of base, and 5-7 of clear. Since it is a engine bay the cost for paint should not be that much. Just be careful when installing the motor!!! It would be a shame to scratch the paint to the metal after all the hard work. Good luck, post pics if you can.

I sanded the hell out of my bay with with wet grit 400 then 600 and then used a rustoleum primer at autozone. Be careful because i tried using a cheap primer and it reacted to my PPG paint. Then I did a three stage pearl. A lot of work but well worth it. Heres a pic and a link to pics of the whole project.
Tons more pics of the whole process!!

PPG aint cheap... my supplies were ~$200 and that's with 1 part paint! To best remove the grease after soap and water, use PPG Wax and Grease Remover. Let that be the absolute last step right before you let it evaporate and prime. Sand with the above sand grits. Scotchbrite pads work well also.

Well, i got the paint today! For my color, a ppg color, it was $40 for 1 pt. and for a full can of clear coat! Not bad, i was expecting more. Taping hasn't been too bad for me. It has worked out well so far with the primer. Tommorrow i hope to spray it if this ****ty weather holds up! I am only painting the parts you will see and using black on the rest where you would never see. Damn, i must have shed 500lbs of crud from in there! So far so good, i'll update if i get to work on it tommorrow. later

I painted my engine bay last summer and it turned out GREAT!!! I first bought some degreaser and a tooth brush and scrubbed the engine bay clean.I tried to use a scrub spnogs but it just got caught on everything when I would try and wipe something.the tooth brush really got everywhere a rag wouldn't. it took about 2 hours to scrub the bay clean but was so well worth it. then I washed it down with clean degreaser 2 more times after that. then primered it then GET this I painted it with truck bed liner. I know it sounds bad but I saw a guy that did it to his Trans Am at a car show and it turned out actually really sharp, I must say it looks very nice. I have no regrets and no peeling paint from engine heat. if I did it again I would use the same stuff!!!.

Do you have any pictures? I was going to use undercoating on the parts you would not be able to see but i stuck with the black rust-oleum and clear.
