sandpaper and some elbow greese....follow it up with something like mothers metal polish, i like wizards because it doesn't haze. ac is ver easy, it's the little pipes and sh#$ that suck.

The rims are getting there but like Kandied91z said, "you have a
long way to go." I have the same wheels and have posted my
process on this board. I am just wondering what grit you
wet sanded to before you polished? I went to 2000 and it helped
alot. It also helped to polish with Mothers mag and aluminum
polish a few times, using a super soft terry cloth applicator and
buffing with a flannel cloth.
I know you probably have seen them before but here is a pic
anyway.

here is a pic of the polished center cap to show how reflective
they really are. Just keep sanding and polishing and they will look
great.

yeah, those are one of the best wheels i've seen polished.......either that or some very good photo work!
as far as removing the parts..........to get the absolute best you could; i didn't.

um... a question about those centercaps...
i dunno about yours but my centercaps are plastic with clearcoat or something overtop the plastic... lately my clearcoat has been peeling off the centercaps...
are you telling me i can polish the plastic centercaps or something?

I polished my center caps with the same process as polishing the wheels. If you look closely, you'll notice that the center cap is wrapped in aluminum and covered with clear. It's not ALL plastic. Just the very center of it is.
don't be misguided............a highly polished rim does look sharp. but it can't shine like chrome in any way possible. side by side there is absolutely no comparison. :nono:
i must say though, for a do it yourself setup, polishing wheels is definately a must have look if you can't afford or don't like chrome.

Please tell me you didn't do this by hand! You didn't use a drimel tool or something like that? That would take a long time. How long did it take per wheel? Looks good though.

TPI383 - Your polished 91-92's was what inspired me to by a set
and polish them. I personally like the dished look of the 91-92
rims.
Kandied91z - You are right, although my wheels are highly
polished they do not shine as much as chrome. Trust me it is not
photo work.
burnouts4ever - I taped of the polished areas and painted with
two coats of self etching primer. Then I sprayed two coats of charcoal metallic
base coat (mix by my uncle at his shop). Finally, I sprayed them
with two coats of clear. There is a close up pic of the inserts in
another post some where, but I will post it again if you want.
iroczrockz - I polished my rims by hand also, and it does take a
long time.

I agree that nothing shines like chrome, but the thing I don't like about chrome is that you can't or at least no one ever paints the accents. Kandied....Your car is absolutely gorgeous, but the chrome wheels almost lose the "lines" of the wheel IMHO. Don't get me wrong, I love your car....just bringing another point of view.:hail:

ah the work of a camera...............look closely and you'll see the lines are in fact painted. but they are aluminum color or a very very bright metallic silver!
all to give the illusion of pure chrome when parked, yet give definition and make a particular pattern when they spin while rolling. hense the break in the chrome when looking at the picture. i really like the wheels, but didn't want the pattern to stand out. i figured if that was the case i would go with a double 5 star look rather than these wheels.
like most things, you have to see it in person to understand; most though do have everything chromed; i however didn't.

TPI383.......again, those are really nice wheels; but i would like to see a head on picture much like the one i posted. the angle you have in that pic shows them looking excellent, but is also an angle that will reflect most of the best parts. i know with my rims it would be like looking directly into the sun. i'd just like to see what the whole wheel looks like from a front profile if you have a pic?

Kandied91z - I never noticed that the lines up the spokes were
painted, but now I see it. I think it is difficult to notice because
the inserts between the spokes are not painted as well (same
with TPI383s').
I like seeing all of the people with nice polished or chromed
rims on their third-gens, since there are only a few nice
examples in my area.
Here is a pic of mine more head on after the polishing was all
done.
I hope this helps to show how reflective they really
are.

don't know about the wool.........i used sand paper and just went through the grades down to wet sanding and a polish to finish. i plan to do them all over again when i remove my engine soon so it will look supreme....but you can do it the car as well, just a little harder.
go for it though, polishing is the best thing especially when on a budget or in this case parts that you can't really chrome or powdercoat.

Guys, those rims are awesome.
Kandied, i've said it before but I'll say it again, your car is just superb.
Now, I don't want to turn this post into a "post your engine bay shots here", but the question was asked "how did you polish, did you take parts off first, etc"
Your car is of the "sell the house, I want that car now!" standard, but you can achieve a "hey, that's a nice engine bay, can I have a closer look" standard, with de-greaser, alluminium polish, dremmel tool, and about 8 weeks evening work, leaving all the parts on. (including the AIR and transmission cooler lines, etc)

Ok heres a question...I think im goign to polish the shot of the 90's rims (the one in my sig). I want them to look as shiny as the 91-92 rims, now my only qeustion's are, do you spray clear on afterwards? Also, what do you think of polishing the parts of the n96 iroc rims that are supposed to be painted to give it an over all shiny/ppor boy chromey look?

That's a good question...about spraying a clear coat after polishing.....I wouldn't think that you could. Since they have been polished with differnt polishes or compounds.....seems like the clear coat wouldn't stick......

Don't spray clear, defeats the purpose of polishing, would you spray chrome???
and i hear most clears will turn yellow after a while.
