looks like the same thing that happened to me 2 years ago to my camaro, and the same thing that happened to the guy in the other thread just below yours.

you know that little black security chip on your key? well that is the reason that they did not succeed. hope you have insurance, they should cover everything deductible and premium inflation free since it has to do with theft.

Unhook the coat hanger and let them take it... I'm sure they'll have fun when the rear axle folds under and pollvaults them into space

I would too if my thirdgen was in a mint like condition such as yours. Mine isn't worth the extra 1000 a year for full coverage. If someone steals my car, then I will just go out and buy another 3rdgen, a 350 TPI this time.

On the chip thing 91 was the first year the option was available for thirdgens.

'89 was the first year for the pass key system (the chip on the key),thats why I was looking for an '89 or '90 iroc when I bought my car....

if they had time to get into the car and break the steering column im supprised they didnt get it started. The previous owner of my car had it stolen, one of the main reasons i got it for so cheap. Thats one of the reasons i havnt painted my car, looks all ghetto so no one would want it neway, my advice keep the factory paint with the clear coat peeling off :P

It was still an option right? I mean it wasn't standard equipment so some thirdgens don't have it from 88-90.

My 88 GTA has the chip, and I KNOW FOR A FACT it's the original column.

I've had people try to steal my car. One time, somebody tries to PULL the door handle off! It did some damage to the door panel which still exists today. Also one time I caught somebody in the back yard trying to steal my car. They were attempting to do the same thing that happened to your car, but I chased him away. Almost was able to grab him. He was lucky, next time I'll run faster.

thats weird then...why only use them on GTA's in 88??? Dont camaros and firebirds pretty much share almost everything??
I searched a bit on the internet and found this page:
http://www.sethirdgen.org/tpi1.htm
read near the bottom where it says
"Also note that if you are using an '89 or later chip, you will need to address the VATS/PassKey issue."

but i found this as well...
http://retro.co.za/efi/DIY_EFI/1997/efi2-228.txt
"Getting around those messy passive anti-theft systems (VATS/PASSkey/PassLock& so on)
If you drive a 85 1/2 Vette or '88 1/2 Camaro/Firebird and you
want to keep your wheels, equip it with a delayed kill switch for when someone sticks a gun in your face and says gimmee."

So maybe some '88's do have it(the later built ones) but it was standard equipment on ALL fbodies in '89
Anyone here have an '88 that doesn't have it??

In 1988, the GTAs were also the first F-body model to get the new VATS II "Pass-Key" anti-theft system as standard equipment in order to help reduce rising vehicle thefts
From gtasourcepage.com

Introduction of GM's Vehicle Anti Theft System or V.A.T.S. makes all Firebirds more theft resistent by incorporating a small resistor into the key.
from Thirdgen.org tech articles about the 89 Pontiacs
