just a degreaser is all you need and hot water works the best, i always leave my engine running when i do it or i put a bag over the carb and distributer when im realllly cleaning it.

Use carb cleaner (spray can type)... powerful $hit, and it doesnt leave the engine all greasy because it evaporates away real quick.

cd-2 engine detail kit retails for about 8 bucks at autozone, and it works really great.

I'd cover the exhaust manifolds too, unless you are cleaning them.

If you cover them up first, then you avoid all the smoking afterward from stuff burning off.

You wouldn't want to cover the alternator, or any other accessories?

Ok yea, covering the alternator would be a good idea if you use greasy stuff like engine cleaner. Don't really need to cover the others, like PS and stuff.

I still think carb cleaner would be the best way to go. It cleans grease and oil and gas off an engine like you wouldn't beleive, and (unless you use ALOT in one spot) you wont have to wipe anything up, it'll be dried off an a minute or two.

depending on how bad it is a mixed solution of simple green and water works well along with old fashioned elbow work and a toothbrush if needed for certain areas.

i did this. My engine was nasty. I went to waqlmart got me 2 cans of $0.79 degreeser cans. SPrayed the entire engine bay down after i covered the battery and alternator, and then used the pressure washer to wash it all of an hour later. It said 15 minutes but the 1 hour worked quite a bit more.

One thing though, i was told this before and stuck to it, try to stay away from the rubber hoses, some degreasers are safe on paint so make sure you get one of them. Try to go crazy with the stuff, two cans is plenty enough for everything you need.

ummm..... once you've sprayed itr down let it sit for 30 minutes and get your good ole tooth brush and scrub the plenum and pretty much everyting down. Gets a nicer effect. Then try your best to get as much pressure as possible as it washes more dirt away. Try to get all the leaves out of there, they cause rot, i used my leaf blower before i got everything wet to get the leaves and loose dirt outta there. It'll look very nice for ya.

I made some custome tips (duct tape and peices from the household vaccume) for a shopvac that I use for leaves.
After I washed my motor, I just waxed the painted stuff, and that made a huge differance. Now I just have to paint my valvecovers, and i'm set.
