I think it's cool as hell looking at right-hand-drive thirdgens. It's great to see how similar yet different it is.

Thanks for the pic! Oh, and your interior is in beautiful condition!

Kinda cool to see, looks clean!

I like the 4th gen wheel in there too.

Curious that the ebrake handle is on the wrong side. I guess they cut a corner here or there.

I have driven an auto LHD car here but not in the US.
I think i would find driving a manual shift strange, not used to shifting with my right hand.

When they do the conversion it's so expensive they change only what they have to, $10K AUS is an average cost .

Yes they do it to firebirds , all cars exept 30 year old have to be converted. So with the initial purchase price , shipping cost to AUS , taxes and import duties and conversions a third gen can get expensive .

My 91Z28 Vert is valued at $27,000 Aus it is in only above average condition.
We have all F Body Generations in RHD here.

Thats sofaking weird, can you get just the dash shell itself and if so how much is it ?

Is that 4th gen steering wheel part of the conversion ?

That would be great if you were a mail truck driver. Just immagine going to an ATM or bank window or fast food. You would have to go backwards all the time.

It's in 1st. Even though its a RHD car the trannys/shift patterns stay the same. It'd be SO weird in a race to be pulling outwards for your first-to-second shift than pulling towards yourself!

Very interesting question.

Perhaps when you have the money to buy a RHD car in this country the fast food employees and bank tellers come out to you.

We drive on the left side of the road , hence right hand drive cars.
All the drive thrus are on the appropriate side of the car for the driver. We also have had some laughs at guys in our car club that still have LHD cars when we go out for a cruise to a Macca's .

The question of shifting gears? well i guess when thats the only way i have done it , it seems natural.

The original steering wheel was replace with the 4thgen unit as the converter had one there when the car didn't pass registration with the original,(damaged i was told).

The consul , box and shifter remain untouched .

When the conversion is done the dash panels are custom made by the converter usually Fibreglass or cut and welded.

I have always wondered this. If you are walking down a hallway in a left hand drive country and someone is walking towards you Do you both out of habit dodge to the left? I have noticed here that people in large crowds end up walking on the right just like if they were driving.

Sorry to get off topic of thirdgens I just find this really interesting.

I found a pic of a 1st gen that is RHD , you can see the chrome brake booster, the 3rd gen behind it is a genuine cop car still LHD.

The map pockets on the doors are the type of acc pockets that strap to your sun visor, cut staps off and velcrow sticks to carpet.

The police car was bought at auction in the US years ago with most original equiptment still there so he deceided to keep it as original as possible.

Sweetness.........:hail:

I had no idea the Trans Am was used as a cop car in the United States.......

Either way, it's cool, What about the legal issues with having a car that has cop lights on the roof??? That can't be too legal to drive daily around the streets.......

We have good parts suppliers here ( www.usgmserviceparts.com ) for one.
The interior parts are the same just placed in different positions the main dash panel is the only custom part really that could give problems.

The cop car can't be regestered for general use , besides the lights etc it is still LHD and is not 30 years old yet to qualify for registration that way, when it does go out to shows etc it does so under special permits.

OK lots of comments and questions

Maybe someone should make a finish kit for the RHD cars. Put the Ebrake and shifter in the right spot. A new shifter design and get the pattern sticker where it should n so on. That would really finish off the car.

-------------

I can see someone now getting a RHD dash mold it with a normal. With dual gauge pods for two driver racing, a LCD or stereo system spot.

---------------

OK who makes them louvers??? I like that kind. Looks like one piece molded that gives shade but doesn't cover up the back window 100%.

-----------------

Its strange but other countries love our cars too.

There is a big thread about Buick's in Japan. Just blocks from a guy working over there was a car lot full of classic muscle cars form the past. I guess right now you can ship any cool car to Japan and make more then enough to do it over n over again. Lots of really cool cars get shipped off.

It is in the right spot. RHD and LHD cars both shift in the exact same pattern, Left to Right (1st to 5th) so the original shift pattern map thing would work. Maybe I miss understood what you were saying though...

So since the steering column is on the other side, I'm assuming the steering box is also on the other side? Rest of the linkage is the same?

The whole steering column is moved and a holden steering box is used but the majority of the steering stays the same.
There is a type of steering conversion that leaves everything as is until it comes from the eng bay through the firewall , it then has what is described as a chain link under the dash to the steering wheel on the other side.
The type that i have on mine is what is called a mirror conversion when everything is changed under the dash and on the firewall.
I have added 2 pics, one is the location of the steering box, the other is a eng bay shot to show the firewall, not great pics but not good camera!

The Ebrake is on the wrong side and the shifter should be closer. All it takes is to tilt the trans the other way.

A RHD car should look like a mirror image of a LHD car. Its not a mirror imaged it blows the whole look to me. It should be mirrored.
