So heres my idea for fender vents
I wanted to put the fender vents ( like flynlows ) onto my car, but dont have a lot of welding experiance nor the ability to have very much down time on my camaro as it is my only means of transport right now. When i go back to school though in the fall i wont need it so heres what im going to do....
I found a local shop that does a lot of fibreglass work for imports in the area. After talking to the boss for a while and getting their gaurantee that their parts will fit like OEM, ive decided to have them do my work. What im going to do is be their "test car" for new carbon fibre fenders with the th functional vents in them. Yes i said carbon fibre. I plan on painting them so they dont look like r.i.c.e. fenders and because they will be painted, they dont have to spend the extra time polishing and perfecting which reduces the cost drasticly.
They said that after they do this for me they will have the "tool" (im assuming thats like a mold) and would possibly replicate it because our cars have a demand for products such as this. What i want to know is what you guys think of this idea and also, if anyone would be interested in a product like this after it become readily available to the public. I plan on having a few custom parts made of carbonfiber from them to reduce vehicle wieght. In reality they wont touch my car till this comin up spring so it still is a ways off. JUst letting you guys know whats up.

Glad to see that I have inspired a new wave of fender modifications, 84CustomZ28 also has them, just a different angle.......What angle were you planning?
Those vents are not easy to find.....So a CF fender with them already built im sounds like a reasonable way to go about it
Keep us posted, I want to see the finished product and if it's close enough to what i have, I might sell my current fenders in place for those.....
Any more info on the fenders you are leaving out?

Kandied-
The shop is " 3G Services". They are located in taylor. If anyone wants to get a hold of them, their numer is 734-947-9434. Tell em who sent ya
Flyinlow-
I actually didnt realize there were more than one version of the fender vent. I remember once about someone having theirs up-side down. I will have to go back and check some posts to see if i can find any more pics. If you could, would you post a pic of your vents just as refrence.
Much thanks
Mitch

guess it's my turn to jump in...
From a distance, like in the picture I've attatched, it's really hard to see the seam. Before I got the idea of modifying these to fit my car, I was going to make them completely seamless, but the 1980-81 Z28 fender louvers are made of aluminum...and our fenders aren't. So, it would have been impossible to weld with a MIG welder...I could have brazed them....but that would have gotten way to hott and probably would have warped the fender. So, I had to bolt them in. I had to cut out the portion of the fender, drill all the wholes, take my hood off, lossen all of the bolts in the fender, it was a real pain to install these....but I managed to get it done..also went ahead and shave the antenna. I really like Flynlow's louvers too...they fit the car really well with the modifications that have been done to it. And I think the way I installed my fender louvers fit the modificatons I've done to my car too.

Anyhow, I just thought I'd tell how I installed my fender louvers...since me and flynlow are the only people to do this, just thought I'd compare they way he had his installedand they way I installed mine...wasn't saying which one I thought was better or anything...just want to get that cleared up

Just out of curiosity......while i have really no opinion on those vents in the upper part of the fender , i often wondered if someone could photoshop that vent.....flip it upside down and put it in the lower part of the door underneath the molding..... towards the back of the door.......centered between the molding and the bottom of the opening of the door...... I ofter wondered if that would look cool or if it would clash with the ground affects below the door......................Anyne care to try to photoshop this idea???? just a thought ....

I've though about that before....and....
I'm not sure if I would want to cut out a portion of material in that location because alot of stress is applied right there...through the center of our cars....through the sail panel area and on down. Someone could try it...but I would think that the metal could start to crazk and split...just a thought..

So let me ask you this - Flyinlow and 84CustomZ28, do either of you notice any real heat being extracted from the vents? Not that I'd do the mod for that reason, but its a valid question.

Pure sports and racing cars of the 50's and 60's used fender vents to reduce the air pressure beneath the hood, thereby reducing lift. By giving the air that enters the engine compartment a controlled way out, the air doesn't have to force it's way out the bottom of the car, which lessens the high pressure air beneath the car. In many of todays race cars, this air is now redirected out of the hood thru the use of louvres, which is ok on a race car, but this practice (althougth there are cars that employ vents of this nature) is less practical on a street driven car where water can enter the engine compartment.
The front fender air extractor, is the vent is located in a depressed area of the housing, in kind of a backward scoop. This design takes advantage of the "Venturi" effect, using air flowing accross the air extractor to create a low pressure area, thereby drawing air out of the extractor. This results in something for nothing. High pressure air is given a pathway out of the engine compartment and at speed, a low drag port is molded into the side of the car which naturally aids in air removal.
This was the original reason they came on the 1980-81 Camaro Z28 and earlier Trans Am models, hoever because of the placement on the 3rdGen camaro, they aren't in an ideal location to reduce underhood heat temperatures......
However they could be made functional with some ducting that took air from the back of the engine bay and out the vents.....it could be done with minimal work.......
As for me.....I'm running a dual nitrous purge out of both vents.....
I installed them for looks.......when you remove the plastic wheel well covers you can actually see through the vent at the wheels.....

hmmmmm
I just picked up a set of these vents made out of fiberglass
I'd like to know where you picked up a set made out of fiberglass.....I've never heard of a set made out of fiberglass. If I could have gotten a set before I installed mine...I would have rather bought those. If they were fiberglass..it would be easy to make them seamless
well after seeing the pictures you posted way back when i started searching all over the net and found a set on ebay
here is the address & contact info i had

Just simply stating it would be an easy mod to accomplish....
84CustomZ28, there is another shop here in Florida where if you take them a part, they will replicate it for you in fiberglass.......
PM me if you need the contact information.......

those are exaclty what I need before I installed the aluminum set! I could definently make them seamless if they were like yours! That's awesome, good to know that a fiberglass set does exsist
Hey, if your looking for these vents, look on the site www.dankoreproductions.com search under 78-81 camaro to find them. You can see them also installed on the Danko Inferno. However, they were installed on the hood instead of on the fenders. Make sure that you say whether you want them to bolt on or not. If not, the price is lower about $60.

I am putting 2nd gen TA vents in my GTA fenders shortly. It was 84custom that inspired me to do that. I got the TA vents off ebay for 17.50 shipping included. I hope mine will turn out alright. I havent seen anyone else with vents in their Trans Ams...have any of you? Lol I would like to be the first in the Trans Am world to have some
. 84 and flynlow both have great looking cars! I just like to be diff but not go OVERBOARD with stuff. Sometimes I get heat about my wing, but also some love it. As others say..."its what you want...its your car" and I agree
