cover the distributor and the carb/TBI very well with plastic bags or saran wrap...make sure it's VERY WATER RESISTANT!!!!!!
then hose the compartment down...
hose it with simple green or engine degreaser... let it sit...
wipe everything down well... and hose it again...
then...if you feel like it, dressup the chrome and rubber in there...

I was scared to death, too... but I just did it recently. I took some plastic grocery bags, put them tightly over the distributor, took My air cleaner off (cleaned it off to the side) and taped a plastic bag over the intake, and taped another bag over the alternator. I know water can mess up the alternator because I have the stupid cervinis ram air hood and have ruined a few alternators before I "rigged" the holes shut.
then use a cleaner (green, purple, whatever) spray it all over the dirty parts. Then hose it all out real good. Then I waited a while before I cranked it up (let it dry in the sun, a little)Then I took all the bags off, put the air cleaner back on, let it dry and when I cranked it up, no problems! And it's been fine, since. It looks SO much better!
It is a little scary to spray water in the engine, though..hehehe... have fun!
(my sig doesn't apply here...I didn't mess anything up. hehe)

Everything I know I learned by messing it up at least once.

use Driveway degreaser and a spray bottle, spray it On and just let it soak
re apply untill its completely Coated, Dont get in a Hurry
Get down in all the Nooks and crannys and eveywhere
Once it is completed coverd in deggreaser, Spray it off
Usually takes a few times But eventually You will get all the grime off.
Its harder if You have alot of Vaccum lines an **** in the way, like our 3rd gens do.
If you take them all off temprarily it works alot better.

I did this recently too, please use simple green, its biodegradable and still does the job. I coverd up just my distributer and the intake, just sprayed it down at the coin-op car wash. don't be afraid to start it right up, afterwards,no need to let it dry. thats just asking for extra rust.go for a good ride,it'll dry up quickly.
cover whatever you think you should't get water on. I got water all over my alternator and had no problems with it.

Also do not be frightened if it squeaks after you are done. I did this twice now and it is just some of your cleaner on the belts making the noise.
Try seeing how much it would cost a shop in your area to steam clean it, this works very well.

Current: mostly stock - newer 305 w/ 12,000 on it
Eclipse speakers all around w/ 10" tube in back
Future: 2" Cowl hood w/ K&N filter

thers nothing like fireing it up at the car wash parking lot, standing there with the hood open doing all your preliminary checks with steam pouring off of your engine. all the while, people are glancing over, with a look on thier faces like WTF?
I may be over cautious, but I keep a small auto fire extinguisher(class ABC,$20 at home depot) I don't have problems with fire, but ANY car can burn up with out warning. you can be sure I had had that it where it could be reached when I was cleaning the engine!
