Tip for VHT Night Shades
I just finished putting my VHT Night Shades on my tails, and I found a pretty good route to go with them.
Unlike painting a car or anything really, I found pretty good results after sanding the clear coat, and re-applying more clear after sanding it, leaving the top coat untouched. I put about 3 good thick layers of the VHT on, and let it dry, and then put about 4 coats of clear coat (I used clear engine enamel by DupliColor), let that dry, wet sanded it with 1200 grit paper, and then put another 2 coats of clear on it. In fact, I never even sanded the last 2 coats of clear, and it came out looking pretty good. I just sanded the first few coats of clear to make it really smooth, since the Night Shades tends to come out a little of the rough side. All in all, I think it turned out nice. I'll let you guys be the judges:
Night Shades: (and some clear coat for that shiny effect)...(and a tinted plate cover)

Before: (with just clear coat)

Very nice man... looks great... i like how it has the color and not so much of a solid black shade... the fact that the color shows through makes it look sweet. Great Work!

That's exactly what I was going for. I'm sure some people will say they would have gone darker, but I wanted that tinted look, not the limo blacked out look that you get with regular black-outs.

Nick those look great! I started doing the same thing to a spare set I have a couple months ago, and I hope they turn out that good when I get around to screwing with them again.

Looks great! How do they look when the lights are engaged? I'd like to see how much darker the lighting would dim compared to simple light covers. I'd figured the clear would allow them to illuminate brighter at night yet keep the dark touch to them.
By the way your cars really do turn into masterpieces over time, I've been a lurker for a long time but I've always seen the progress your cars go through and you do a great job on them!

I really do appreciate it
I haven't got a chance to take a look at them lit up during the daytime, but last night when I was done and it turned dark, I turned the lights on and they didn't effect the lighting at all. You could clearly see the light shining thru them even without applying the brakes.

Re: Tip for VHT Night Shades
what brand of clear did you use?
Edit: I'm sure you painted the outside...correct?
Edit: Whoops, I should have read the OP more closely...
