My Car is Turning Colors!!!

Hello All,

I am new here. I have had my 1992 RS just under a year. I put a bra on it and I have noticed that the part of the car that is covered is still bright white while the exposed part is duller. Is ther anything I can do restore it to is beauty outside of a full paint job?? Also I have noticed that the bra has left a black mark on the paint where the seams (of the bra) come in contact.
Is there a recommended product for this?

A.

Ah! don't use a bra! First of all, in my opinion, they are quite ugly, and second of all, with prolonged use, the lack of exposure to the sun of the covered area will cause uneven fading of the paint. I'm not sure of all that much that you can do...maybe put a u.v light on the front of the car to fade it the rest of the car's shade But if someone else knows something that you can do besides new paint job, I am anxious to hear it

I have a bra on my car to cover some damage. Once it's fixed, its getting burned. The problem with them is that they do not aloow the sun under them and it gives you uneven color plus they trap dirt that will scratch the paint.

Well the original reason I put the bra on was due to the fact at certain times here in Louisiana we have severe swarms of insects. Now it is covering some minor damage to the drivers side FQP. But I will be burning mine soon as well. Which is why I asked about restoring it.

Hi Amber,
I had another car that was white and it had a bra on it as well. It was a big mistake for me to ever waste my money on that bra.
Depending on how long this bra has been on there, you might only need to give it a good wax job.
If that does not do the trick then go and have the car detailed at a car wash or detailing shop.
It will cost in the area of $50 to $150 for the detailing, but would be worth the money.
Again all this depends on how bad the oxidation is on your car.

If you feel like doing it yourself.

You can get some Meguiar's Body Scrub paint cleaner and follow it up with Meguiar's Cleaner Wax. Both are in red bottles and can be found at your local auto parts store for around $6 to $8 each.
I've used both of these products and they do a great job! Depending on the condition of the paint you might have to do it twice.

Depending on how this turns out.....
Then you have to make a big decision. To keep or toss the bra.

Hope this helps.

Without doing any major work I would use some TR-3 (the blue, not green can) Its like a wax only much much better. It should help out quite a bit but might not make it 100% perfect. Everyone that I know that has used TR-3 is still using it, nothing else.

Probably time for a buffing.

8" wool pad with 3M rubbing compound @ 3000RPM followed by a foam pad, machine glaze @ 1800 RPM.

Will bring it back to life, remove swirls and scratches.

Amber, I totally can relate to the bugs because I'm in LA too. But I think that's no excuse. Wash your car more often.

Another "Main" reason for using a bra on our cars is up here when it snows, and for those silly people who drive it in the snow it protects the front end from rock chips..
Mine used to have one on it.. That was the first thing to get removed when I handed the previous owner the money..

i only put my bra on when im going on a highway trip to avoid rock chips or anytime i think there might be danger of rockchips or large amounts of bugs. when its parked the bra is off. but personally, i think the bra on a black car makes it look fuggin EVIL

oh an BTW, never use a bra in the winter, water melts and gets trapped in the bra and then when it re-freezes it makes the bra stick to the car and its just a general PITA to get off. i speak from experiance.

Bras are pure evil, No car should ever have it's nose covered by a bra! I would rather hang my head in shame as I display the damaged front end of a car, rather than cover it with a bra. Bras have a place, it's just not on the front of a car

Bugs,bugs,bugs......
I lived in Florida for over 20 years and I know what those love bugs can do to a paint job.
I've done the bra thing in the past just to wind up having the same results as Amber.
The best solution I've found for the bugs is wax wax wax!

After you wash the car, wax the front end. The bug $H#T will come right off when you wash it again.
Also soak the front end of the car.
By soaking I mean......
Spray the front of the car, then wash the top of the car and soak the front again. Then wash the side of the car and soak the front again.
Wash the front end of the car last and you won't have to rub like crazy to get the bug gunk off. It's not a cure all, but it does help.

You might even want to get a good Carnuba wax to apply to the front end of the car for this purpose.

Bra or No bra you're still going to get bugs on the front. Wax will offer almost the same protection as the bra would. ALMOST!
