3M swirl mark remover
3M swirl mark remover
I have a few questions about attempting to remove some swirl marks in my clear coat. First I've been using Zanio Z5 to no avail. So, I've bought some 3M #39009 to try out. My first question, should I remove the zanio with Dawn first. Second, the 3M stuff is designated as "for Dark colored cars," I'm assuming red would be included. Thanks
Dawn is used to remove wax prior to using Zaino, I don't know whether it'll remove the Zaino or not. If your swirls are bad enough that the Zaino won't hide them, I think you need to move a step or two further up the 3M compound levels. I would purchase some 3M Perfect-It and try that first. If that doesn't do the trick, then I would recommend 3M microfinishing compound followed by the Perfect-It. I'm not sure exactly which product you alread purchased, but if it is the one I think it is, it is much less abrasive the Perfect-It and probably won't do the job you want, at least without way too much work. The two compounds I listed above are what I use after colorsanding to give that deep perfect gloss. I don't know that you'd need to strip off the Zaino before using either of these, as they should cut right through it. You might email Sal though just in case.

Blue is right. If they are swirl and not scratches you would need:
9" Buffer (like Dewalt DW 849)
9" Foam Polishing Pad
3M Perfect It III Machine Glaze Compound
Buff at 1800 RPM
Wash car, re-apply your Zaino
NO SWIRL
BTW - Swirl marks are usually caused by polishing with the wrong cloth. Spend 6 bucks and get a 3M Detailing Cloth.

Thanks guys, you are right about how the swirls were caused - wrong applicator with zanio. I bought "100 % cotton towels made in the USA" but not of the cannon/fieldcrest vareity. I've never used a buffer so am planning on doing everything by hand. I may have to take it to someone who knows what they are doing to buff them out. They are very minors swirl marks, can only see them when the car is clean and the sun hits it just right, so I'm hoping I'll be able to remedy it.
JJ where are you from, i buff cars all day everyday (50-55hrs a week), i agree with what the others are saying.
after the car is painted at our shop i:
wetsand it with 1200 or 1500,2000 matters on how i feel. then i check for any dirt nibs, and sand each of them out.
then i hit it with the buffer and some 3M buffing compound, and then some machine glaze as soon as all the sanding scratches are out, after that i use some spray on automotive detailer, (similar to Z6) and then its done, doesnt take much, and i use my buffer at 1400 for the compound and 1000 for the machine glaze, easier to make sure you dont take off an edge or a molding.
go to a body shop near by and ask for a side job buffing, i charge $100 for the whole car so it may or may not be expensive.
i am redoing my car, it was painted 5-6 weeks ago and it was buffed then by the guy who taught me how to buff, well anyways, i am redoing the buffing and wetsanding. MAKING IT LOOK LIKE GLASS. block sanding with 2000 grit and then perfect buffing, and polish the whole car again, then i might look into some zaino since i need something to cover up my work and i hate WAX.
wish you could apply zaino with a buffer.

Rare-Roc, I used to live 1.5hrs from you and visit the quad cities each summer to run in the "Bix." Now, I live 7 hrs away (downstate IL), if I were closer I would hook up and have you do some buffing on the formula. I will look around locally for someone now I suppose.
