I figure we don't know even 10% of the story yet. I'd wait this one out for a week before voting.

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

First off, Thanks for the nomination. Never thought I would have anything COTM worthy. Just going to get straight to it, share what I have.

1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am: This is what I consider my main Thirdgen. I have owned the car since 2014. My father and I drove out to Grant Park Michigan and bought it. Originally had a carmine red interior, but I swapped it out for a complete black/graphite interior out of my crashed 1985 TA. This is also the car I started to learn how to build/restore cars on. At the time, I had a pretty good-paying job at a local meat production facility, and I threw every cent I had at it. I will post a copy of the PHS document for OE options/ The build thread I have on the car. The future goals for this car are basically bringing it to the next level. I built it to the best of my abilities at the time. I have a fully restored 1986 Digital Dash, ZL1/SS Brembos, Vintage Paxton SC, and NOS 1986 Tan Recaros that I'm going to get recovered in black (hate me later) that are all going into the car.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...red-about.html

1985 Trans Am: I bought this car to build a tribute car to my first thirdgen. A little backstory, when I was growing up my uncle had a maroon hardtop Trans Am. Having 3 daughters who really couldn't care less about the car, he told me that if I held a high GPA all through school I could have it. He bought the car new in 85 when he graduated college as a gift to himself. It really wasn't anything crazy. Hardtop, LG4, 3.08 Rear end. Very basic car, but it was a real rear window louver, Factory Hood bird, WS6 car. The story goes the car was special ordered with all these options and the new owner was not able to secure financing on the car. My uncle walked into Kole Pontiac and bought it. Long story short, the car had GatorBacks on it from 1989 which I didn't know anything about at the time. A tire broke seal while I was driving, and that was it for that car. I have the Rear bumper with dealer sticker, the whole Interior, WS6 wheels, and a few odds and ends from that car. Anyways, I saw this maroon 85 for sale and jumped on it. Knew very little about it, and honestly didn't care. Turned out to be an early 85 TPI car. Has the 500 rpm higher redline aka the L69 cam. Had the wrap-around wing which was not standard till 86, and a 9 bolt 3.27 Rear. Not a bad little car for what I paid. The car is under the knife right now, and The plans are to restore this one to 100 Percent OE. Nothing Crazy. Just a fully loaded replica (with T-Tops) of my old 85 Trans am that started all this. I wanted a worn car, because I wanted to rebuild it, and have an attachment to it. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...-my-first.html

1982 Mecham Racing Trans Am #34: Just bought this car so I don't have a deep or cool backstory on it. Its a PMD, and an LG4 car. Has a 700r4, and 3:73 rear end from Mecham. Has some rust issues but I already have a parts car for it.

1983 Mecham Racing Trans Am #123: This car is really cool. Not only is it a Mecham car but it is an L69 (1 of only 662 cars in 83). It has the Mecham racing Talon suspension which came with Koni shocks, lowering springs, droop limiters, and front end reinforcement. I will go more in-depth on the next Mecham car. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...ing-trans.html

1986 Mecham Racing Trans Am #12: Hands down the rarest car I own. 1 of roughly 25 built by Mecham in 86. The last year of true Mecham Production (although you could take a car to them anytime and get the parts). OE it is a 86 WS6/TPI car. Pretty basic after that. Sadly this is my roughest Mecham car, but it still exists, and that is all that really matters to me. All the Mecham parts are still there. I do have the PHS documents, and documents from Mecham. Plans for this one is to go all out on it. I have this image in my head of what a Turbo Mecham car would have looked like. With it being white, I am going to borrow some parts I have from the TTA, Have some special gold badges made from the Mecham decals I have (I know a really good badge guy). Going to be a very in-depth rotisserie restoration for this car. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...ing-trans.html

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

Part 2. Enough with the Birds, Bust out the business in the front party in the rear hair, Bush light and
1985 IROC-Z: A few years ago I went out to find an 85 L69 car, this car popped up somewhat local and I jumped on it. My father and I drove from San Diego to Las Vegas to get this car. It is a one-owner car that I bought from technically the 2nd owner. He was a GM mechanic and was trying to flip the car. This is the story I was told about the car. The first owner special ordered the car from the dealer with all these options. Kinda weird considering the fact that the guy was in the middle of the desert, but the car is loaded with all the options you could get in 85 Besides for T-Tops, and console clock. The classic story of life getting in the way and the rare muscle car falling into neglect. From my Member's post "The story goes that the Original Owner Only drove the car for a few years. Then started a family, so he parked the car. Time got the best of him, and the car sat for 20+ years in his driveway. His health began to decline so His kids sold the car knowing that he could never truly drive/Restore it. The 2nd owner only had the car a few months before I got my hands on it, and was in the process of restoring it (as you can see in the pictures). The sun really did a number on the paint and faded the interior a bit but none the less the car is in really good shape. It only has 45,xxx miles. It's all factory down to the wear parts. Still has the retaining washer on the brake rotors. Sadly The Gatorbacks are gone". Plans for the car are a repaint, Fix the small issues it has, Weight jacks, and maybe a 5in wing. Still have not made the decision. But overall it is a real 1 year only Sliver Iroc, LS interior, Hardtop, LB9 (The hunt for the L69 continues) car. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...es-i-need.html

I'll have to post pics later. 2 of my cars have a build thread here. I'll start with those. BTW everything is built by me including all wiring etc. Only paint is farmed out. Here in The Netherlands it's quite a hassle to build stuff and get parts.

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

Ok, I'll try to present my cars with my rusty school english, please forgive me if something is incorrect.

First, my 92 Firebird. I bought this car in 2014 as a 3.1 liter V6. I knew the car and the PO since 2005 and I have alway wanted it because of the low miles and the pristine condition. After a few years the PO wanted to sell it and I took the chance. Here it is the day I bought it.

After four years of owning it, I got the chance to buy a cheap 92 trans am 5.0 tpi in 2018. I bought this and planned to swap my little V6 to the V8 tpi. After disassembling the V8 I found broken piston rings in cylinder 1 and 5 and the block had scratches in the bore of #1 and #5. This lead to a complete engine rebuild, bore .030 over, new pistons, new cam, new crank, new everything.
Now it is a perfect 92 trans am clone to the last detail (except for the "T" in the VIN ), only the rearend is still the 3.23 V6 without posi and drums. But a 3.23 posi rearend out of a 92 GTA is on my bench and I'll install it next year after overhaul (howling pinion bearings).
I swapped the cragar wheels for refurbished diamond spokes, swapped the grey interior to an absolutely mint black interior, swapped the hood to a trans am hood, powdercoated k-member, a-arms, sway bars, alston subframe-connectors, TDS wonderbar, Borgeson steering gear, spohn steering kit, TDS sway bar kits front/rear, 1LE end links, Founders tubular panhard, Founders tubular LCA's, aluminum driveshaft, Magnaflow muffler, new KYB shocks, new Moog springs, Mechman alternator, stainless steel brake and fuel lines, 4th gen master and booster, LS1 brake conversion from BBU, air condition retrofit to R134a, etc. etc. etc... too much to list. Nearly everything is swapped to better or performace parts, even if I drive the car less than 1000 mls a year and only cruising, no racing or autocross. I did all the stuff because I WANTED to do this. It doesn't make sense, I know, but I am very proud of this car and I really love it. Especially over here in germany, we have the TUV here, our two-year technical inspection that is obligatory here. Nearly EVERY modification we do to our cars has to be inspected and has to be licensed by the TUV engineer in accordance to our (very restrictive) laws. That was the hardest part, being street legal with alle the modifications was a REAL PITA! Last month the transmission gave up on me but I had a spare one on the shelf. I'll istall it in spring, along with the rear end. To cold right now. The actual mileage of the car is 52.000 mls and the engine now has about 1500 mls.
Here are just a few snapshots from my over 1000+ pic archive:

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

Next one is my 88 GTA. It's an 88 hardtop model with digital dash, leather interior and everything else the 88 cars had. Even the D81 rear wing doesn't have any sign of cracks. I have known this car since 2008 and bought it 2018. The PO bought it in 2008 with 16.000 mls on the odo in an immaculate condition and I thought "Man, I need to buy this car one day!". He kept it save and in 2017 he found a small oil leak on the intake bolts. Known problem, oil winds up through the threads. He gave the car to a buddy who is a technician at Audi germany... Well... he was an idiot. He didn't use RTV on the china walls, he didn't use RTV on the coolant passages from the block to the head, he didn't torque the bolts properly, he didn't use thread sealer on the bolts, he didn't set the timing, he didn't flush the cooling and the oil system (oil in coolant and vice versa due to unsealed cooling passages). In the end, the PO got back a poorly running car which spilled oil all over the floor above 3000 rpm, it literally puked out between the china wall and the intake.
He contacted me if I just want to buy the car, he was fed up with it. So we argued a little on the price and I finally bought my "dream car". had 19.000 mls on the odo when I signed the contract.
It took me about two weeks of evening work to cure all the s**t the Audi freak did to the engine. I tore down the intake and put in all-new seals, RTV and everything that is recommended to do. Set the timing, put in new plugs and cables (still had the original packard cables, but two where defective because the Audi-dumb*** layed it over the exhaust... again, what an idiot...), I flushed the cooling system four or five times, also the engine oil and now I have a perfect running and driving car.
Everything else is stock from the factory, except for a TDS wonderbar I added to prevent for stress cracks.
The car is still in an immaculate condition, it even has the little part # sticker on the rear right rim, on all sway bars, on the springs, rear axle and whatnot... I just did a little TLC and service to it and now it is just... perfect in my opinion. I also had a ceramic coating done by a professional company, this made the paint to look like new. Since I bought it two years before, I have only driven about 1000 mls, alway very firm, very careful and heavily smiling.

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

And last but not least my latest addition to the bird nest. I found an 85 iron duke just a two hour drive away about four months ago. I wanted a duke since I first heard of it. Such a poor engine in such a big car, this is just hilarious and it is a piece of third gen history. So, before some idiot bought it to convert it to a poor done V8 conversion, I had to do the deal and bring it home. The car is not in best shape... the paint is partwise faided and some douchebag found it to be a good idea to swap parts of the tan interior to black... But technically, it is "ok". Not good, but ok. Normally I wouldn't even think of buying a car in this condition compared to my other cars, but it is one of three dukes I know in germany, so... I had to do it. And it has almost nothing. No extra options except for automatic transmission, map pouch and rear spoiler. Nothing else. Has idiot lights, no rear wiper, no intermittent wipers, no rear defogger, no electrical windows, no electrical mirrors, no nothing. And it has the goody 14 inch steel wheels with the hub caps. That makes it even more weird and lovely to me.
It runs and drives but needs a part-restoration. I will do this in the next years, it is a project car and I want to keep the cost low, it's more of a fun car to me. The interior should get back to stock but finding tan parts in germany is hell on earth. Everything you see is ridicously expensive and the Knigh Rider guys are willing to spend crazy prices for these parts. Yes, there are also Knight Rider guys over here in germany. I will take out the engine and trans and service both parts completely. Few oil leaks, engine runs poor, I bet the drive gears are toast, the transmission shifts late... Well, nothing really fatal, just a bit of good old mechanic work. I just have a few snapshots of the car, I haven't driven it on the street, it is not registered and I wouldn't pass our technical inspection without a bit of work.

Very cool!

@Twin_Turbo I just realized that you live in Enschede. Not very far away from me in germany, I am about 15 minutes away from Venlo and Roermond in the netherlands. The world is so small...

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

What a cool COTM! I love everything here!

Anyway, most of you guys know my cars from other threads, I'll try not to bore you with long stories you've heard before.

My 1989, IROC-Z hardtop. LB9, MK6 T-5 5 speed, G92, N10 dual cat, BW 3.45, KC4 oil cooler, DX3 decal delete. Ordered it new. Was 3rd to last May 1989 built car, built Wed. May 31st. EPA put it on hold at Van Nuys holding lot for several weeks due to N10 certification issues .Was going to be 1LE number 112, but decided I wanted AC last minute. Currently about 11K miles.

My 1985 IROC-Z, t-top. LB9, 700R4, 3.42 rear. Found it at a Minnesota Buick dealer after it was just traded in. Spoke to all previous owners. The original owner's father had some ownership in a race track where they ran IROC races. She saw a yellow IROC racer and wanted one for the street and that's what she got. About 43K miles.

My 1989 IROC-Z convertible. LB9, 5 speed, 3.08 rear end. Originally purchased in central California by a recently divorced Asian lady, who's friends convinced her to buy a hot convertible. Her legs were too short to reach the clutch pedal and only put 6,800 miles on it from 1989 to 2004 where it went to a collector. I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago. Currently about 8,000 miles.

Voting is open.

I came really, really close to giving it multiple choice. Didn't know if it would blow minds or not so played it safe. Maybe we'll give that a try in the future.

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

So here are my details with a couple updates from the nomination thread. Everyone I know says I fit the definition of a third gen hoarder, to the point that even though I have had opportunities to buy vettes and others I have always passed in favor of another 3rd gen (the Grand National in the pic is my wife's (my wife is the best) and the '69 vette is my son's). I have loved third gens ever since I was a teenager and worked many summers while in high school and other jobs while in college in the 80's to finally be able to buy a new '88 sport coupe in the spring of 1988 when i was 20. Since then I have bought a couple more, built a third gen garage for my collection, and done many projects.

Also just another sign of my dedication, when I began re-looking for my first 3rd gen that I had traded in 1990 on my '91 Z28 vert, it was our summer rituals to ride around the areas that the carfax stated it had been registered at and ask people if they had seen my car (of course we were riding around in my other '88 that is the spitting imagine of my first so I could use it as a reference.) Finally one Labor's Day weekend when I ran the carfax as I did every year on it, it showed up with a new hit of a salvage title on it. I told my son I know where a salvage yard is in that town and will be there first thing tuesday after Labor Day. Long story short when I got there they didn't think they had it as they didn't have any "red" 3rd gens, but I said I still wanted to look around and they guy remembered a "maroon" one, and I said it was dark red. When we went out and started walking to it, I just knew it was my first one. The guy said how do you know for sure and I told him to look at the VIN and then by memory recited my 17 digit VIN number! When I called my wife she asked in what condition it was in and I said really not that bad, see the link below for what not that bad really was!

I have 9 third gens presently in my collection and my son has one I bought for him as his 16th birthday present. I attached some links to some of my bigger projects and a couple pics of my garage showing all of my third gens together (my son's Formula is not present in these pics). I also have a huge collection of third gen parts as you can imagine!

1982 Camaro Pace Car Silver/Blue T Top - 4 Speed, 38K miles

1985 Camaro IROC Black T Top - LS of many variations Swap Project
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...gine-swap.html

1987 Pontiac Formula 350 Blue - Bought for my son's 16th birthday SBC and LS3 Swap Projects
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...50-vortec.html
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...-ls3-swap.html

1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Dark Red Metallic - My first Camaro bought new in 1988, traded in 1990 for my '91 Z28, after intensive search reunited and rebuilt!
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...inal-88-a.html

1988 Camaro Sport Coupe Dark Red Metallic - A twin to my original first Camaro (also only 30 vin numbers apart) that I found and bought when I wasn't sure I would ever find my original first one. RAMJET 350 Swap Project
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...ort-coupe.html

1988 Pontiac Trans AM Red T Top - Original 305 / 5 Speed still only ~30K miles

1989 Camaro IROC Z Convertible White - Original 305 / 5 Speed

1989 Camaro IROC Z Convertible Blue - 5 Speed Conversion

1991 Camaro Z28 Convertible Dark Red Metallic - Bought brand new in 1990. Ordered to my specifications including original 5 Speed. Installed Paxton Supercharger in my parents driveway in 1991. Still has less than 8K miles but I drive it to work and Church a couple times a year (original rims have original tires still on them so I do not use them for driving anymore, HAWKS where are those 17" 91-92s!)

1991 Pontiac Formula Dark Red Metallic T Top - Future LS Swap Project

and some pics of the garage....

Re: December 2020 COTM **Voting Thread**

Also besides the 3rd gens themselves, I also hoard parts for repair, rebuild, conversion projects... I have enough to keep me busy for a long time, just a small sample

how about some brake calipers or wiper motors

interiors and t-tops

4th gen fuel tank conversions, exhaust, and rims for upcoming projects

I have a lot more parts including floors, body panels, ECMs, etc, etc but I think you get the point I am "all-in" on third gens!

These are awesome collections... When I first started coming around these parts and seeing how many Thirdgens people had I realized folks here are for real!

Very tough to choose... You could take cars from each collection and make a dream team...

Somewhat off topic but has this Camaro ever been nominated for COTM? I'm not a stock drivetrain kind of person but the original appearance has always appealed to me. Especially this one.
Hope to see more of it some day.

I know this one has won COTM before... I forgot or didn’t realize it only had 11k miles! For a 1-owner car bought new most people keeping miles down would still have 25-45k on it... At what point did you decide to watch the mileage and box it up? It just seems like such a desirable optioned car that would be irresistible to drive... Especially back in the day... I’d think most people would box them up and stow them away in the early 2000s but they’d have some miles by then...

Must be an interesting story from an original owner...

Thank you! Yes, it has been nominated for COTM and won on 8/15. Although it still gets nominated from time to time, I won't enter it again. No sense putting up the same car more than once. I'd rather give other guys a chance to showcase their cars.

It's weird how things turn out. I bought this car to be my daily driver, hence the addition of AC after I intended on ordering a 1LE. As a newly minted professional who wore a shirt and tie to work, I was really tired of showing up to work sweaty in my non-AC Omni GLH. In the end, I never took it to work, because I was afraid of door dings. So I still went to work sweaty.

As winter came, there was no way I'd be driving it through the salt and snow.

Next thing you know, it became a protected car.

Wow! I know a thing or two about driving to work with no AC... had a Tahoe that went 300k but the AC went at about 150k... Truck is probably still running somewhere!

So it was just by chance it wasn’t driven and then it became a collectible at a certain point, huh?

You have a couple lucky survivor stories between that car and the little lady that couldn’t drive the vert!

Figure it's been in storage for 6 months out of every year up here.
