Ripped up the carpet.... AGAIN

Well I replaced my carpet about 6 months ago. But I put down this rubber insulator underneath the carpet that was supposed to deaden the sound to make it quieter inside.

Well ever since then, my car has a faint smell of rubber inside. Especially when it's hot or I don't open my car doors up for a couple days. I hated it..... so the other day I ripped up my carpet again and tore out all the rubber crap.

Now my question is what can I put down underneath the carpet to make it a little quieter inside? Foam? Plastic? I heard there's some kind of paint or spray that when you heat it, it turns to foam???
My car does seem louder now that the rubber stuff is out. I haven't glued my carpet back down yet, cause I want to see what you guys think I could use...

Thanks for the help!

Try Dynamat. A little on the pricey side, but works wonders. There is also some spray stuff you could use from Stinger. Use it on the inside of the doors, too.

If you care to go back to the way it was when it came from the factory, you can goto your dealership and get "jute" padding. We sell it by the foot. Thats what comes glued to the back of the carpet if you get a GM replacment carpet.

Go to the junkyard and rip some of the sound detenter from cadillacs. Or buy dynashield or dynomat from stero shops.

Who made the rubber insulator that stunk?

And yeah, I've never smelled my Dynomat after installing it; but then again, I never used that much of it!

Thanks for the tips guys. I got the rubber stuff and my carpet from Classic Industries. Actually I think they referred my to a company that sells carpets. I can't remember now

I'm gonna have to call a few stores to find some dynomat or dynoshield or stinger spray. The spray sounds kind of cool. I'll try to find these products.

Summit Racing (800-230-3030, or their website) also sells Dynomat. Did classic industries send you to ACC? http://www.accmats.com ? http://www.1aauto.com also sells the ACC carpet, for less than ACC's own website! I bought my carpet from 1A. They might have a better idea on which sound deadener to use.

I would also suggest dynomat. Not to get too off track but... Tom, how did you like the quality of the carpet you got from 1a? Good coloration and stitching? Fit in okay?

1A sells the ACC carpet, and ACC's a GM authorized reproduction center. The carpet was perfect; very good quality. I suggest though, that when you replace it, you test-fit the console before each cut. (The cut ACC makes for the console is ridiculously small, and it has to be widened.) I took a "bit" more carpet off, and that cut extends out of the console by a 1/4 inch. Of course, it's right by the seat belt, on the PASSENGER side. Everything bad to my car happens on the passenger side. I tucked a scrap of the new carpet behind the cut, so it's not very noticable.

But yeah, I recommend that ACC carpet 100%! And 1A had the best price. Funny tho, with the new carpet, all kinds of things "appeared" that looked fine, but suddenly looked like crap. Such as, the plastic door sill cover, the rusty seat rails, the dirt on the kick panels, the dirty black "hush panels" (above the passenger & drivers' feet), the sunvisors, the headliner, etc... the carpet makes a hell of an impact (in a good way)!
