After turning the key all the way to start, it will turn back to the on position, but it gets stuck and will not turn back. My car was running in my driveway for about 20 minutes because I couldn't turn the damn thing off. Although, it will turn forward, and if I do turn in forward to just before the starter engages, I can get it to turn off, but it takes a few tries and I have unfortunatly grinded the starter a few times... Has this problem ever happened to someone else? I don't like the fact that I am putting my flywheel and starter at risk everytime I want to turn my car off.

check to make sure that the rod at the bottom of the steering column isnt binding up, and if thats not it, i'd say its probably your lock tumbler assembly. which is what you put your key into. to replace that, you have to take the steering wheel off and turn signal cam. hope this helps.

I had this problem a couple years back. It ended up being the whole lock assembly.

It ended up being the whole lock assembly, what a bitch taking all that stuff off.. Then chevy charges me 84 bucks for a new cylinder and new key!. Twenty six bucks for the key alone
Now the odd thing is that the car doesn't run anymore, bah.

I had the same type of problem with my '84 Chevy pickup, I squirted some WD-40 into the keyhole and it has worked perfectly since.

mine did that the first 15 minutes i had it. I put pressure on the key and punched the column really F'n hard by the key, and voila, it hasn't done it since. Hitting things fixes things, i'm like the freakin Fonz

if its an automatic it could be the button on the gearshifter, mine was stuck in a little bit before and i have the same prob
