ABS headliner PLUS fabric install

Ok,

I've ordered headliner fabric from year 1, but I'm considering an ABS liner with fabric pre-installed. Given that I've got to take out the existing liner, would I be saving any major grief by installing an ABS liner with fabric?

True..

I did a search on ABS, and most people said they looked crappy. Haven't come across anyone yet who's fitted ABS with pre-fitted fabric. Just trying to figure, 1) does this product look any good, and 2) is it worth the extra money ($150) to be able to just rip out the old headliner anyhow, and re-fit the ABS.
I guess that's a personal (cash) choice really!

What's up? Yeah, I installed the ABS Liner in my Firebird. I tell ya, I wouldn't go back to the regular ol' headliner. Mine came w/ the foam and material already glued on, and that liner is VERY sturdy. No need for clips to hold it up by the front windshield. All you have to do is cut out the spaces for the visors and an overhead console (if you have one)...it's tough stuff to cut, but MUCH better than OEM. I highly suggest it

UK,
Ive fitted a Year One ABS with prefitted liner and I have to say it looks great. It wasnt too difficult to fit,the only tricky bit being if you have a roof console,as you have to cut out parts of the ABS to allow this to fit.Otherwise it is very easy.
The other thing is that the shipping of it costs a lot as it is oversize,so if you can think of a few other things you need at the same time, the shipping wouldnt seem so bad.
Email me if you want any info

cheers

Thanks for posting this....I was interested too.

As far as painting it...I think it comes folded in half....the fabric is 1 piece, so you can't tell once it's installed, but the point being that if you didn't use the fabric, you'd see a big crease in the middle...........is this statement accurate?

Powermite,
Many thanks for the post.. Do you remember roughly how much the shipping was?
Looks like I'm heading for the ABS.

p.s. For sale... 5 yards black headliner fabric from Year 1.

Abu,

The ABS headliner with lining already attached does come folded in the middle, however it isnt folded in a sharp crease. So as soon as you get it out of the box,it springs into shape. The material is all in one piece so there is no sign of a join or crease

Scott,
Thanks for that, the T-Top's looking good. (A lot easier than fitting the coupe ABS I imagine ).

Headliners

We have fitted heaps of the ABS down under and with the sun.. rain.. etc open t-tops.. the abs is the ONLY way to go... and unless your really wanting to DON"T cover it with material.. just semi-gloss spray it.. at least you can always just wipe it clean with the gremlins get on it... and Yes it takes maybe one our to fit.

.. If your got t-tops .. get a bit of rubber extrusion to cap the T-Top opening edge.. thats all...

WHO MAKES THEM... ACME AUTO HEADLINER in Long Beach .. 16th Street from memory. They have them for Chevy trucks now too..
Hope that helps...

I installed the same headliner with fabric preinstalled last summer,
and it went in perfectly. As was said before it is very sturdy. I
highly recommend getting the whole thing and not just the material.
I have an 84 z28 with t-tops and I know that if I just
ordered the material it would of been pointless, because when I
pulled the old headliner out it disintegrated.

Scott's85T/A,

I scanned through that other post really quicky and it does look very good. I wasn't clear on what was precut on the unit when it arrived. The reason I'm asking is that I'm wanting to install one that does not have the holes for the seatbelts cut out. I have a roll cage and I'm going to be using 5 pt harnesses and don't want the extra holes in the headliner. Does it come this way??
Thanks!

Jay

If you look at this pic. you will see that the plastic is pre cut but the fabric isnt cut at all.If you get the same kind I got it should look great.

Great! Thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if that was the backside of the headliner material or the blanket it was laying on. Where did you buy it? That will be the next thing I purchase! Thanks again!

today I fitted the fabric!

Well I bit the bullet today and removed the old headliner to see if it could be saved. Took about 30 mins to get it out (my first time y'know!) and I didn't break any clips!! Both sides of the headliner near the seat belt were in pretty poor shape, but I managed to save them with fibre glass repairs.

I've had the cloth sitting in the shed for a few weeks, so I thought I'd better have a go at fitting it. Used carpet spray glue and it went on a treat. I used a small paint roller and glues about 6" down across the piece, at a time. Just got to slot it back in tommorow.

Got some pictures if anyone wants to see.
