Rust in rear - underneath where bumper attaches
I have seen this on numerous Camaros. Mine is an 88. It looks like the bumper support. About a 3-4 foot piece of metal.
Any suggestions for fixing.
Have not removed the reat bumber cover yet.

This should help to keep it at the top.. I noticed mine has that also.. rather dissapointing since the rest of the car is galvanized.. sandblast the rust?? sand it .??

Is it rusted through, or just surface rust? If its through, the only really good solution is to cut out the rust and weld in new metal, either a rust free section from another car (salvage yard), or fabricate it out of sheetmetal. If its just surface rust, sandblast or wire brush the surface, clean it with Metalprep or something similar to neutralize any residual rust, then paint over it with POR15. That will stop the rust from coming back. Just be sure to paint over the POR15, as its not resistant to UV (shouldn't be a problem under the bumper, but I'd still paint over it).

I think I found it
I think the area in question is the rear bumper support brace. Has anyone else removed theirs due to rust and replaced it?
I have found them on the web for around $90.00
Thanks, Mike Jones

There are going to be two areas that you are going to find problems with. As you can see by my sig I am restoring mine inch by inch. I did not want to want to install a used rear filler on my car so I did what the rest of the car is getting.... Sand blasting! Remove the impact bar(will be rusted on) and sand blast both surfaces. I blasted the enitre rear filler and inner frame rails. Sprayed it down with OSPHO and then used Sherwin Williams products to finish the job! There are some areas where there was heavier rot then I wanted but hey a reproduction filler is not available. I have approx. 50 pics of this area alone inch by inch. If you would like pics email me at motherhenson1@aol.com.
I found a this piece at a local junk yard and got it for $25. I too had such sever rust there that three of the tabs that hold the bumper cover on were hanging with no where to attach them to.
The replacement took the better part of an afternoon but it was well worth it and not as much trouble as it may seem. The part I got was blue but I light sanded it and sprayed it with undercoat before re-installing. Seems to work good.

What piece is this that we're talking about? Are you talking about the actual steel rear bumper? Or is this a piece that connects the steel bumper to the rear frame?

Yes, the correct name is the Impact Bar. You can get one at Partszoneonline.com for $92.38. I did a catalog search for "rear impact bumper" and it turned up in the list. I guess if I hadn't found one in a junk yard that would have been my next choice.
Good luck....

Yes they are still listed in data bases. However they are no longer available from GM. All they do is get the parts directly and sell them to you at a discounted price. GM doesn't have any so how will they get one? Try and order it and I bet you they can't get it. I tried Classic Ind and Year One neither had em in stock
They normally order form a dealer also and have limited stock piles of GM parts onhand. Prove to me that they can get it and I will say I am an Aszhole and need to STFU. Until then I stand by the two parts guys that have checked for me and they are DISCO!!! Thread
