Well, as for your state you'll have to check you local penal code. As for a national law they have to be installed by the factory. Most states however only require that the two rear brake lights work.

87, yeah you need it buddy. Mine didnt work for awhile and the inpection place failed me. WhenI tired to talk to him about it I told him that it doesnt work cuz my trunk motor was shot and I just had the trunk wired down from the inside and the power went through the trunk motor. He didnt care. He told me that If the car had it, it had to be working and Most all cars Have a 3rd break light some where execpt for older cars. So if you try to get away with it just be carefull DMV sees alot of Camaros n Firebirds to know whuts up. Your best bet if they fail you go to a gas station and have them do it. Make sure you talk to the guy first though let him know whuts up. For my light problem the guy at the gas station said " Hey it was workng when the car was here" Just think if you start having to pay for your inspection...you can start guttin the car tottally, no cat, no muffler noEGR, oh it will be sweet.

In this state, if the car came with it, it's got to work. I would imagine that it's the same case everywhere else unless you can find some back-yard grease monkey that doesn't know that all 86+ cars had them.

I think it might depend on your state, I think here, if you had it and it was removed to the point that no one could tell if it was there in the first place then no one would know... especially considering that the early years did not have them, most cops could not tell the difference between an 82 and a 92, AND considering here in Flint there is no annual inspection...
BUT if you have a burnt out bulb and the lens is still there then you might have a problem.
But everywhere is different...

obviously, if he has a different spoiler, they cant tell that the car came with out a third brake light, therefor, he will be ok, no tickets! what are they going to say? "hey you took off your tbl and installed one without, your naughty!" i doubt anyone in inspection will even catch it. like someone said, it was 86 and later, bet they dont know that!

When I put on the '91/'92 spoiler I put an LED style light underneath it. It has about 10 LED's and it's extremely bright. Besides the spoilers are hollow and easy to run the wire thru to the stock wiring.

the problem is if you have an 83 Camaro you will not NEED the 3rd brake light, if a cop sees (what looks like) a 91 Camaro driving down the road, does he REALLY know if its an 83 that LOOKS like a 91 or is it really a 91, so I doubt you would get pulled over...
However IF you have Inspections like in some states then they could knock you down...
I bought a 91 Formula and did not even notice that it was missing the high mount light, until after I sold it and about a year later the guy asked me why it was missing...

I ordered it from JC Whitney
, it was only around $10. It still works though! (Looks similiar to the pic that bj350hp put up), only its under it, instead of in it, I wanted to put it in it, but the body man didn't know how......
