I am prepping my car right now for a paint job, and I was just wondering what sealer does exactly and if it is necessary in all cases. I am just sanding the clearcoat off, which there isn't much left of anyway. And I am filling the dents and putting primer on only the places I have worked on (dents, scratches, etc...). And probably a day or two after I am going to get it painted.

 

sealer prevents the paint from reacting differently to different materials underneath. It's not at all uncommon for a ring to appear through the paint around a spot that you repaired, even if it's primered. The sealer will help prevent this.

 

Does anyone know if Maaco will spray a sealer before they paint? Or will that be extra $$$. I don't have a spray gun or air compressor, nor do I know anyone who has either that I could borrow. So unless I can get a can of if, I will have to get them to do it.

 

WHo cares. Anything maaco sprays is going to flake off within a year anyway.

look at the nose of my 84 sc here. the wonders of maaco paint. i will also add here that the paint on my driver's side door is cracked, and they got red paint on the weatherstripping inside the car when the car was painted a few years ago (before i bought it)

 

Maaco is a bad idea! If you decide to go there anyway here is some tips.
1. wash your car real good (those cheap a$$es paint over any thing)
2. roll the windows up (you dont want paint specs all over your seats)
3. remove all emblems and trim ( once again they paint over every thing)


All the people that work there are the rejects who couldnt color inside the lines as a kid.

 

4. Bring a new razor blade to scrape the paint off your windshield before you attempt to drive it home.

Yeah, that's exactly it. I wouldn't let Maaco paint my shed if it was free.

I was thinking about just primering it black for now, and may'be saving up for a good paint job later. At least the whole car would be one color.

 

primer will not keep panels from rusting, at the very least use a flat black pain over your primer.

also flat black will give you that "cool stealth look"

Well I am not having a problem with rust. The car still has the original paint on it, I was just thinking I sanding what's left of the peeling clearcoat off, and then throwing some black primer on that. True, it would look like $^#%, but for now, it would give my car one uniform color. Would the original paint keep my body panels from rusting without the clearcoat?

 

I would!

I'd make sure to tape off the cement below it, empty it out, remove the hardware from the door, take off the trim, remove the roof, and scrape the paint off the window when they're done though.
