Should be "Righty Tighty" "Lefty Loosey"

I just took mine off the other day, and it twisted right off (turn counter-clockwise to unscrew).

Ok, how do you get the button off? What I am doing is replacing the old **** with one in better condition. I just want to make sure I don't break anything. Thanks.

Shift ****-

I have ran into two syles-
1 the clip is in the front of the shifter **** and is U shaped you simply pry it out and the **** comes out all together.
2. the button must be pulled off (simply grasp with hand and pull up) and under the button is a C clip which you remove and the **** body comes off.

Just got back from trying to replace the ****. My 83 had the type where you have to pull the button off then you have to remove the C clip. The C clip is a little tricky to get off. After I had the **** off and tried to put the one I got from a junkyard on, it would not fit because it only had one tab and it was wider that the ones on my 83 Oh well, at least I know how to remove everything now. All I have to do is go back and get one similiar to mine. Thanks for all the help.

Well I have the manual, and I'm a fairly strong guy, and for the life of me I can't screw it off, so does anyone know how you get it off, because I really don't think it just screws.
