How do I replace the sunvisor rod clamp?

I have a 1991 Chevy Camaro Z28 with a passenger side sunvisor with vanity mirror. The problem I am experiencing here is when I am on the road the passenger side sunvisor flops down whether on a smooth road or bumpy road. Has anyone ever performed this work before? If so, it would greatly be appreciated if someone responds. I am also open for suggestions on an alternative plan. Thanks.

beyond turning it on such an edge that it stays up i'm with you.....it's been bothering me for quite sometime but i'm always tied up with other larger projects. i picked several different sets of 4thgen setups to try but the mounting base is very different.

if you figure it out let me know as i'd also like to fix mine. i've tried everything but it seems they are just stripped on my own and flop down.

Usually the rod (the bullet-shaped insert that goes into the visor itself) is broken and so turns freely in the base mount, as a consquence, no amount of tightening the visor to the rod will help. I picked up a bone yard piece for little or nothing.

What JamesC is correct. The rod itself turns freely and will squeak as well in most cases. Here was my solution. Took maybe 5 minutes a side...if that. Go get yourself a nice sharp 1/8" drill bit. Pick up some 1/8" roll pins. Center punch the housing where the mounting rod passes into. Maybe about 1/4" back from the lip. Drill all the way through. It might not seem like it but you WILL go through both the casing and the rod. Now just get a hammer and tap the roll pin (tapered side first) into your hole. Now you are done. You are going to chip alittle paint here and there so just grab some touch up paint. You or anyone else wont even know its there. Mine havent flopped since and I did it over 4 months ago.

If anyone would like pictures I can grab some later today and post them tonight. Let me know. You can grab a drill bit and some roll pins at autozone or the such for a few bucks. Its such a relief to drive, withtou them moving. Even with my tops out and the wind hitting them they stay now. Good luck!

It may not be the rod,but the bushing in the visor where the rod goes into. Its plastic & wears out after a while. With the vanity mirror on the visor the weight of the mirror just makes it worse.Removing the mirror would help alot,But there is another way.I had this problem on my camaro too.I just cut some plastic from a blister pack. Its thin like the bushing.Cut enough so you can wrap it around the rod & the original bushing around it.Put the rod back in the visor & tighten as much as possible. The screw also loosens up over time so check that first. Also switching the vanity mirror from a t-top car (if you have a hard top)helps since its half the width & weight.

I have a sunvisor rod clamp that purchased from Classic Industries which requires that I remove the fabric from the visor and the vanity mirror and insert the clamp(bushing) inside the visor and reupholster. But, I don't have a upholstering experience at all. So, maybe I will pursue the blister pack. Where do I get it, 84 1LE?
GhettoCruiser, Did you drill near the bull nose tip or towards the back end of the rod support? When you inserted the pin, is it to keep the visor permanently up or can it be adjusted to block out the sun? By the way I just thank you all for responding to my post.

Steve: A blister pack is just what some products come in.At least thats what i think its called.Like in the pic here. Its the clear plastic stuff.Thats what i used along with new bushings.Which by the way classic sells. The catalog says theyre for 67-69 f-bodys,BUT they worked great on my 84.Till they started wearing out.Part# is K624(about $5).Just use the white plastic ones in th kit,not the rubber black ones.

Hi...sorry it took me awhile to respond. Its hard to explain just where i put the pin...so I will take pics as soon as I can. Basically I knew the rod wasnt supposed to spin, so the pin I put in is just to keep the rod from turning. The visor can still be adjusted like original. The blister pack idea to "beef up" the bushing is a good idea as well. The pin is about 1/4 inch or so back from the bull nose....if we agree on what the bull nose is... in fact...maybe Ill try a quick paint picture...

Here is my attempt... it sucks. I kinda guessed how far back the pin goes into the housing... Actually I didnt think i was even going to hit it. I think 1/4 to an 3/16 back from the tip should be good.
