The Saturn Gas Cap Door Switch
Okay, somehow my search couldn't find any of the old topics, but I had a few questions on putting a flush mount popping gas cap in my third gen.
1. What model/year am I looking for here?
2. What all parts do I need, like just the gas cap part, or the hinges as well, and I know I'll need the cable and release switch.
3. What tools will I need to bring to the yard? (not a huge deal but I'd hate to get there and not have everything I need. doh.)
thanks for any help

i'm interested in doing this also. Sorry i don't have any info to contribute, but next trip to the yard I'll look for a cap that would fit and see how tough it looks to adapt to a 3rd gen.

Well this is the info I've gathered, this isn't 100% so I'm looking for confirmation and any tips, etc.
You need the cap, the latch, the hing spring, and the cable pull release.
Not sure but I think it's an early 90 model of the sl2 is one that works, among others.
It does work, and it's the correct size already.
The cable can be placed next to the driver seat like any other car with your own work.
That's a start, I guess I'll just hit the yards as I guess if it's the right diameter, there both gm, so it should work. And I don't think they differed that much as far as the gas caps are concerned in the round-capped saturns.

Thats the same saturn model i took my parts from.Although the gas door is a little smaller in diameter. You will need the levers, cable, latch release, gas door.I used my original gas door & grafted the (striker & spring)from the saturn gas door onto my original gas door.I also took the flat spring from the saturn gas door & adapted it to my original in the same fashion as it was on the saturn gas door. The release lever was mounted next to my driver seat.Although i had to lengthen it a bit using the trunk lever from the saturn(gas/trunk levers are a 1 piece design). From start to finish it took me about 4 hours.Did this over a year ago & it still works great.Just look for the SL2 model(but i believe ALL saturns use the same set-up though).

Hey 84 1le, when you say you just used the parts and grafted them on your gas cap, you're saying you still have the stock gas cap door on the car still? I did want to do the flip switch for security reasons, but I also wanted a flush mount gas door. Maybe I could use the stock door cap, cut out the finger hole and have a body shop redo it?

I want to see pics of this, sounds interesting. I've been toying with the idea of the racing gas door but it seems like i'd be confused with someone who was going to r i c e a third gen. the stock door needs help for sure.

well here are some pics.1st ,gas door. The semi circular thing on top is for the gas cap.Took that from some GM car, cant remember which one.You also see 2 of the rivets that hold the saturn striker w/ part of the gas door to my original.

& the latch. Some trimming was needed to clear 1 of the 3 screws that hold the splash gaurd to the Qtr.panel.That screw was also moved to the edge or the latch would've sat on top of it.

very very nice :-). That's exactly the look and functionality I'm going for. I'm going to search around and see if i can find a gas cap the correct size with a release mechanism already on it to save some time on modifying the original cap.

And so is balsa wood the best way to remove the thumbhole? I'd figure some kind of fiberglass or something?
