umm... i doubt you'll explode your gas tank by drilling a whole in it. But, I think its like an inch under the floorboard hatch metal stuff in the trunk - if that makes any sense. Just drill where u wanna and after the first layer of metal it drilled, see how much farther or how much room you got.

what are you mounting?
I don't recommend drilling in the hatch area. I used velcro to hold my amps down, and it works really well.

If its for holding AMPs down over the tank do this.
Pull the carpet up and lay down a piece of MFD cut to size for the complete back top. Put carpet back down. Now your save to mount amps. if you ever deside to take em out. or sell the car you can remove the piece of mfd and have nothing to worry about.

its actually for mounting the "BOSE for GM" speaker box in the back. it covers the well.. i got one and want to install it in my firebird. bad pic, but you can see it in this pic covering the well. anyways. i need to drill on the wall of the well towards the front of the car.

If you're ever worried about drilling too far, then buy a set of these drill stops. They're pretty inexpensive considering the piece of mind they provide. Even if drilling through your tank doesn't cause an explosion, it's still a big PITA to fix!

Just place the collar around the drill bit and tighten the set screw at the desired depth for which you'd like to drill.

The metal is like 18 gauge so you only have to drill 1/8" depth at best to poke a hole. The gas tank isn't right aganst that part of the well so you have about an inch or just slightly better to drill.
