89 Formula Spoiler...
I am hoping to get an 89 Firebird Formula. I just got back from test driving it (drove over 2 hours away). The car is in fantastic overall shape, however there are 2 exceptions. one of them is mechanical and i already posted about that on another section of this board...but the other thing that needs to be addressed is the spoiler.
Its hard to explain, but the spoiler is cracked in 2 places. Also, from the original owner trying to adjust it, the hatch is misalligned. I went to look at it with my dad, who is an ex GM mechanic from the 80's. We know that the spoiler will need to be replaced relatively soon because if it doesnt, that back area on/around the hatch will rust (from various reasons relating to the misallignment of the hatch), and we'd like to prevent that if we purchase the car. The seller says itd be muc better to get a fiberglass 'replica' of the original spoiler because the original spoiler is made out of a bad material and is also more expensive than the fiberglass.
I would like to know approx. how much do you guys think it would cost to replace the spoiler and have the new one repainted and all of that. Also...is this true about how the fiberglass replicas are cheaper and better than the originals. and if so, where could we get one. (i know that ramairhood.com sells themn for $400, but the seller of the car said hes seen the fiberglass spoilers for around 250)
Any help is appricaited. Thanks.

All of the fiberglass replacement spoilers (replacement for the factory rubber ones) I have found were over $350. Good luck finding one less, I have been looking for too.

Lift gate - Lift gate - Spoiler wing
Spoiler wing - W/o notchback 1987 - 1990
$350 for glass aftermarket sounds pretty cheap now, huh ?

Im sorry i dont quite understand the prices you gave me...i am not sure if the prices you gave me include the entire rear hatch, which i know is extremely expensive, or just the spoiler. If we do get this car, the only thing that will need to be replaced will be the spoiler...not the entire hatch.

Paint costs vary by color. The white for my firebird, $38/qt, the teal for my camaro, $89/pt. Both are PPG bc/cc colors.
If the spoiler can be sanded and shot out of the box, materials (paint & sandpaper) + 1-2 hr labor.
I would imagine the glass replacement bolts to the OEM holes so that's just a matter of R&R old w/new.

well its nice to know that these [seemingly better] fiberglass spoilers are also much less money than the original. Now are all of the fiberglass ones across the internet the same, or is there a good place to get a good fiberglass spoiler for around 300-350. Or is the shop we take it to going to have the connections to be able to get a good one.
