Weight reduction Vs. Safety
Weight reduction Vs. Safety
i think a lot of useless weight could be saved by taking off the metal that holds the honey combs, or at lest making something like them out of aluminum? This is what im talking about...
anyother weight saving mods? beside a fiberglass hood?
body wise....

U will be wish that was there if u get in a front end hit. And you would have to have something under there or the bumper will sag. Iwas thinking of a way u could use a newer car reinforcement bar thats alum. Olds alero caddys and a few other cars use them. Would have to cut them down and drill some holes. With all the other stuff u have done I"m sure u u will thing of something.

the older cars, like 83 or so?? some of them had aluminum crash bars, and the weight savings wasnt all that amazing... it never will be if you want equal strength
anyways, i dont want to imagine the carnage from a serious accident if there was nothing there at all
even a minor impact will having nothing to hit except directly into your frame rail... another bad mod, if you actually drive the vehicle

You could "swiss cheese" the impact bar with a hole saw like the frames on the Super Duty Pontiac Catalinas in the early 60's.

It's been mentioned, but I think the best options for the bumper support are replacing with factory aluminum parts or going with a custom made piece (check out the fabrication board for examples).
I also think there are better places to reduce weight that won't compromise structural integrity. Start with rotational mass first.... aluminum driveshaft, lightweight rims and flywheel. Maybe lightweight seats... the stockers weigh a ton. Drop any options that you don't use like A/C. maybe go with a tubular k-member. I guess it does also depend on what your reason for reducing weight is and how much weight you want to drop. lots of topics are out there about weight reduction.
