Chips in windshields can be fixed by many different companies that squirt a liquid into the glass then vacuum seal it.

Larger cracks cannot be repaired. You run the risk of having the crack go completely across the windshield, separating into two pieces. It can be very dangerous at high speeds.

Your best bet, if you can do it yourself, is to buy a new windshield and install it yourself. It should run you about $300. If not, many auto places can install a windshield (if they have it in stock) in an hour or two. The labor will cost you more.

You can risk the crack getting bigger for a day or so depending on driving, weather and road conditions. However you should have the windshield replaced ASAP.

Its broke down by the black strip on the bottom its mutiple cracks. Think maybe some weather tape the metallic kind will be a temp fix for a while? or some rtv?

OUCH.. $300? Around here companies will put it in for less than $230... i've heard claims of ppl on here that have gotten brand new windshield glass for like $130-$150 and installed it themselves (the installation materials are CHEAP.. like $10-$20)

Wow, I have heard cheaper than $300 also but I've only ever replaced 1 windshield and that ran me the three hundred. It was for a 90 Firebird too. ::shrugs:: Guess I got ripped.

For multiple cracks against the stripping, you could probably get away with some tape for a short time. The first rain may not peel it away, but the sun will dry it out then the rain will cause it to break away. Filling it with stuff might also work for a short time, however in the summer, everything expands and contracts throughout the day, and it will do that at a different rate and speed than the glass.

I guess the bottom line is - try anything. Ultimately you will need to replace it.

yea.. you can buy a third gen windshield for around 138$ my last check. all you have to do is pick it up. installing it is a 15 minute job.. and can say you a bunch of money over having it installed. especially if you have a lame installer like i did. 197$ for the windshield and install only to have my dash pad broken up by the guy when removing the windshield.. and then the company comes back saying it was already broken (because it is an old car and it is a common problem).. So in the end to replace the dashpad with a new one ( and there is one out there and i know which warehouse it is in) would cost me $300 more clams.... Cheaper to do it yourself...

[For multiple cracks against the stripping, you could probably get away with some tape for a short time.
Tape will have no effect on the glass.
The front windshield is basically laminate glass. 2 pieces of glass with a clear bond agent between the two sheets.
If it chips/breaks on the edge, the crack will continue to run it's course so long as there is a twisting force applied (the body flexing) to the glass. There is no real way to stop it if the crack starts from the edge.

To describe it simply, you're watching the pane glass that's on a house window break in ultra slow motion.

I got my windshield installed and bought for free... That's why I like State Farm! Windows are non-deductable. Check with your insurance company first!!!

Not trying to be a PIA, but the $ sign goes before the number! I'm seeing this more and more and it's becoming a pet peeve.

I agree with the comments about insurance. Check there first. I would not play games with the windshield. It plays a very integral part in the car. A hack fix, even temporary, could become a dangerous situation.
