Dashpad crack

I got a small crack in my dashpad. Its about 2 cm long. Is there anything i can do about it? Ive searched and only found threads about badly cracked dashes. Is there a little kit that can fix this? thanks

I've yet to see anyone perform a long-term fix on the dash pad that looked OK...and once the pad cracks from the sun/heat, the entire piece is pretty much baked anyway, so even if you fix the crack, more will probably show up not too long from now.

I've seen aftermarket replicas for ~$80 but cannot remember from whom...

I repaired a crack on an '85 S10 with one of those cheap kits from Autozone. It wasn't perfect, but it looked pretty good. Worth a try!

Ahhh...well if it's impact damage, then by all means try the kit.

So what kind of kit would this be? A vinyl repair kit?

i used this stuff called liquid metal and made a new corner. it looks really good (in my opinion). when i point it out to ppl in the car they always say that they wouldnt have noticed it unless i pointed it out. after the liquid metal stuff dried, i repainted the dash black and then cleared it so that it would still have shine. i think it looks great. i cant tell you what company makes that liquid metal because im off at university and its at home. sorry.

Tour the local scrap yards. Should be able to find one for less than $50. I bought one for $27. Plenty of them sell out of the classifieds fourm but most folks ask $75+ and then there is shipping on a large fragile object. Scrap yard I say.

That's it. Most parts stores have 'em. IIRC it was around $10.

I did the same thing with my dash. Jammed my knee into it when getting in to put it in the garage at the end of the weekend.

It was perfect before hand too. Man I was mad.

I got lucky and the little corner peice that broke off was laying on the floorboard, so I got some black RTV sealant called "The Right Stuff" from NAPA, and glued it back into place with that, and carefully picked off the excess RTV when it cured. I know its there but nobody else sees it.

EDIT: A new one from "Classic Industries" is around $350.00.

I checked out Classic Industries. They're around $87.00. Not too bad for brand new if salvage yards are charging $50.

That's a plastic cover, not a real dash pad. A real dash pad is $350+ brand new.

I'm still a bit confused as to how this is happening. I'm 6'4" and never even come close to hitting the dash. I have had my foot get caught under the gas pedal while trying to switch my wallet from my right rear pocket to the left side...so I'm a gimp, too!

No doubt, I am 6'2" and I have never come close to hitting my knees on the dash?
Let us know how that patch kit works out, I am interested in the results.

maybe the knee hitting the dash is a short person thing I came close to hitting my knee on it but don't think i ever hit it.

The way I broke my old was I removed it to fix something and sat it upside a a door that opens inward to the garage and the large garage door was open. I turned around the wind blew and all i heard was something like a gun shot. It wasn't worth trying to fix.

Not trying to steal the thread but, I like to know one thing though, why you might can fix a crack in the speaker grills of the camaros. My dashpad is mint besides that, any ideas?

Good luck with the vinly kit, let us know how it works.

I am only 6' tall. But,...

The car is a lot lower than our mini-van, you got to step up to get into the van see.

I only had the car out about every other weekend that first summer I had it so I was used to getting in the van.

I still drank back then.

Still confused?

So I applied the Vinyl repair the other day. Let is dry and checked it out. It looks pretty good. Alot better then a crack in the dashpad. I dont know if i would use it on a seat bc it seems like it would be a pain to apply on a soft surface.

I used the Permatex "Vinyl & Leather Repair Kit". Id recommend it for anyone repairing a small dash crack. But not if you want to repair a large area, say more then 6".

Remember, the cracks will keep on cracking if you dont stop them. If you use a repair kit remember to drill a hole with the smallest drill bit you have. This will stop the crack from continuing. Once the crack hits the hole or vise versa it has no where to go. Then you can patch the hole and the crack.
