center console

I have a 86 trans Am, automatic, and would like to buy a black center console. Mine is tearing away from the shifter area and the back cover is coming off. Any idea where the best place to get his unit would be? Thanks

I'm not sure if they ever made black consoles.Only grey.If you ever see a black one that's because somebody painted or dyed it.Not sure about the 4th gen consoles though, maybe they had black ones. That might be a good solution if they did.Anybody out there know???

Do a search here for a ton of info on the 4th gen console swap...apparently using a 6 speed console is fairly simple, using an auto is a challenge.

And yes, some 4th gen consoles could be had in black (ebony)

For the original question, there is a brand new GM 3rd gen console on Ebay right now. Expensive, though.

Even if your thirdgen is an automatic, you can use a 4th gen manual console and it will work fine

Good to go. Again thanks for the heads up. Your knowledge on this type of thing far exceeds mine. I really do appreciate the help.

My knowledge is pretty basic...I just read a bunch of stuff after doing a search. I plan to try and do the swap myself in the next month or so.

The 4th gen console install is VERY easy. Mine bolted right up in the console storage box, and I just had to figure out how to fasten the front of it to the car. Then again, I'm also using the 4th gen dash and had the entire interior out when I did this..

What did you end up fastening the front to?

Hunteradam, I will definitely keep you posted

The Firebird radio pod attaches at the back to a bolt on the top of the transmission tunnel. Obviously I had no need for the radio pod, so I just fabbed a simple L shaped bracket that went from that bolt to the hole in the back of the compartment where you can store tapes on the 93-97 console (I think that's what those slots are for. What was GM thinking?). I'm not sure how easy that explanation is to picture, but the console doesn't move around at all.

I'll admit it...I am confused. Why didn't you need the radio pod? A 4th gen console doesn't eliminate the pod, so I don't quite get it. Also, isn't where the pod located, and where the CD storage located pretty far apart? The pod would be at the front of the console, and on the '97-02 consoles at least I know the CD slots are in the console storage area at the back.

You can find a lot of consoles on ebay. I have seen a bunch of 4th gens in the wrecking yards.

The 93-96 Camaro console has a pod built on to it near the front that stores tapes. However, you can remove the pod pretty easily if you want to keep your thirdgen dash and radio pod.

Oh, ok, I get it now. Didn't realize that about the earlier consoles, and also didn't realize you swapped over to a 4th gen dash as well. That must be a lot of work!

It wasn't too bad, took maybe a weekend to finish. Obviously that picture isn't the finished product, and I'm still working on the door panels. I love the updated look.

I like those seats. Where did you get them and how much did they cost you? On top of that, how hard where they to install.

Great looking console, and thanks for clarification on the project.
