bolt-on vs pin-on

Well, I've done a little bit of looking around for hoods and learning about bolt-ons and pin-ons. I see that pin-ons are quite a bit cheaper, and i actualyl kind of like the looks of them better as well. However, there IS the bigger risk involved with it, and I plan on putting it on a daily driver as well. I don't know quite too well how it works, but is there anyway that I can make sure the pin-on stays on, like lock it somehow? I'm thinking fo getting the twin turbo hood for an '88 t/a.

pin on on a daily drive might be a PITA. your gonna have to take it off all the time just to check/change/replenish fluids etc..

The pins for pin ons stay snug so you shouldnt have to worry about it. They do make a key lock style also.

hm.. so it's not so much a matter of safety as much as it's a matter of being a hassle then? I'm still a bit confused, when you have to open the hood with a pin on, do you have to literally take it off? Like there's no hinge or hydraulics on it at all?

Well if there was a fire under your hood you couldn't just pop the hood and use your fire extingisher to put it out. But just a normal car doesn't usually start on fire. I think it would be a PITA checking oil and adding washer fluid, stuff like that. But it's all up to you.

There cheaper because you only get half a hood lol. If you care about your paint at all dont get a pin on. It will be a pain in the butt to take on and off. And no matter what you do you will end up scratching the paint. High speed it will shake and move around. Pin ons are for a track car not a daily driver.

Not trying to offend anyone. But, thats what it was like for me when i had one.

Save some more money and buy a bolt on.

I have a pin on. I like it. It might be alittle more of a hassle but once it is off there is nothing in your way. Makes working under the hood much easier.

There is no point to putting locks on a pin on hood. The hood is so thin that if anyone realy wanted to they could just grab it and break it in half to get it off. Then you end up with stolen parts and a piece of junk $400 hood.

hmm.. well about how long does it take to take off? I guess I'll have to look at one to tell for sure, but I'll keep looking around a bit.

pin ons were mainly produced for racing cars due to the weight savings and also the fact the whole hood could come off which makes it easier to work on the engine.

My advice is to go with bolt on. You'll still probably have to put hood pins on it at the front to prevent the corners from coming up.

well, why does it take longer once it's painted?

And now i'm thinking about getting a bolt on like you mentioned, then putting pins in the front, by the vents.

Alright, my method of madness on my daily driver is border line to others, my car is primered, i am 6'4, i have long arms and i love the 4 pin "race" look, i love my pin on, on a bolt on i hit my head and have to lean over to get to the compartment near the cowl, so for me it is a convenience, not a hassle, i would like to have the bolt on for the ease of opening, but i will set up a extinguisher that will be activated from inside the driver compartment, so you will have to make a decision that fits you, my wife never drives the RS, she cannot drive a stick anyway so that is not an issue anyway.

anybody heard stories about fiberglass hoods cracking because of the bolton hoods hinges and actuators putting too much pressure on it?

Yea, i think harwood sells low resistance shocks to prevent this on a bolt on.

Because when it is painted you need 2 people to put it on and take it off. If it bends to much you can crack your paint. It is not that it takes more time it just takes more people
