car seems to always run hot

my car has always seemed to run hotter than i think it should. I even have the fan so it is always on instead of a thermostat. It hasn't overheated but i think it would if i let it. When I run the ac on a hot day within 10 minutes the temperature is rising steadily (without hardly ever going down) it gets to about 220-240 in 10 minutes thats when i usually turn of the ac or arrive where i am going. The scoop underneath is in tact i have a new water pump new radiator, recent tune-up, any ideas??

Re: car seems to always run hot

Did you have problems before you got the new radiator? My friend had a guy build a radiator and it didn't fit so he took it back to have it resized. He put it in and his car always overheated and couldn't figure out why. Then he had a look at the radiator and the guy had just sheered off a few inches to make it fit but also closed off the tubes when he did it.

I also had a heat problem when the electric fans died, but it sounds like you have that working. If you took the thermostat off, I believe that could cause a problem, at least if it affects the temperature sensor and coolant release. Not sure on that though.

Check to see that the fans are indeed working or not

You will cool down when you are moving whether the fans work or not

Re: car seems to always run hot

I know the autos with air run warm. It's partially due to the auto trans creates heat and in turn heats everything else. do you have an auxilary transmission cooler? adding one might help abit if you already do then maybe it's placed infront of your rad and blocking the airflow.
I had a friend who added an override switch to his fans to keep them running in an effort to try to keep his 91rs cooler.

Re: car seems to always run hot

thanks for the replies... not sure if i have the auxilary transmission cooler but i will find out, will it make a difference on how hot the engine gets? my radiator is the right one and i had this problem b4 i replaced it too. it hasn't actually overheated but as i said i don't let it. how do the rest of you keep your car running cool? shouldn't it basically stay below 200?

Mine stays at 190

This temp has alot to do with the thermo your using

If your using a stock 190 thermo you shouldnt have a problem

Re: car seems to always run hot

I know sometimes the transmission cooler is installed in front of the rad, thus blocking some of the air going to the rad. My manual trans camaro actually runs pretty cool, but it also has an engine oil cooler. However all of my auto trans cars have warmed up quickly.

Just wondering, is the overheating problem ion city stop and go traffic or does it do it on the highway as well? Maybe your air dam is still there but could be bent keeping some airflow out. One last thing, check to see if your heater works, if it doesn't your therostat is stuck and there's your problem

Re: car seems to always run hot

thermostat can't be stuck because it was taken out so the car would run cooler. if the air dam is bent can it be fixed? it runs hot like that in stop and go traffic and just sitting

What happens it you put the thermo back in? if you take it out there is no resistance to you coolant flow and it could run through your rad so fast that it dosen't get a chance to cool down in your Rad. I heard this was a common problem in old ford flatheads and they used a large washer in place of the thermostat to solve the problem.

Re: car seems to always run hot

If you run no therno you have to put in a restrictor with a 3/4" hole for the proper flow. You can get these at any stockcar raceshop. Not really a great idea for a DD but it will help the rad dissipate the heat. Good Luck Kevin

Also might be time for some new coolant. A good flush does the entire cooling system good, especially this time of the year. And I would put that thermostat back in, especially if you are Daily Driving.

Re: car seems to always run hot

My car has a stock thermostat, the ac is in and works and i have a huge transmission cooler mounted in the middle of the rad, in traffic on a 92 degree day with 98% humidity last week it got to 200 and that was as far as it went. My transmission fluid runs throught the rad before it goes to the cooler and back to the trans also. So i dont know why you car runs hot, having no thermostat will do it, you need to get the restrictor plate to run no thermo. i also dont have any antifreez in my rad, its royal purple with water, 50/50 mixture, works great

Also don't rely to heavily on the stock temp guage they can be off as much as 20 degrees. When the one in my 87 GTA digital dash shows 220ish it is actually 205 according to the computer. Aftermarket guages tend to be more accurate that the stock ones that are now 20 some years old. FYI
