anyone have any idea whos car this was?

Saw this ad today. I'm curious if this is (was) a members car?

http://boston.craigslist.org/nwb/pts/413459256.html

I'd like to hear the story behind it before I contact the seller about the legal status of parting out a vehicle he doesn't have a title to.

Most places here in Minnesota have a waiver you sign stating that if you don't pay your rental bill for a period of 6 months anything in the rental unit will be cleaned out and possibly sold to make up for the rent money owed. If that is the case and this guy actually got the car this way then yep, it's legitimate. I wouldn't buy anythuing because you can't be 110% sure it's all on the up and up. He should use something more secure like ebay maybe.

Here in NC if a Towing service tows your car and you don't pick it up within a certain amount of time they can get a title and do what they wish with the car. Although I think they are suppose to contact someone before they are supposed to get the title.

There was a towing service around here that would pick up a car and put it in their lockup. Then not contact the appropriate people and get a title for themselves and sell the cars. It was pretty shady but they finally got busted.

Well. Let me rephrase..

I'm curious if the owner of this car is a member because I'd like to talk about the status of the vehicle.

True contracts such like "articles left behind become property of xxxxx" however no civil contract and tromp on state law, and the law is very specific with regards to vehicle ownership, abandonment, etc.

I think you understand now where I'm going with this

Thats most likely why they are parting the car out. I used to work for a wrecker company and they could get titles for abanded cars for parting fairly easy but couldnt resell the car as a whole for some reason. Seen then cut up some dam nice cars while I worked there. Ive been the route of not being able to pay a storage fee years ago when i got in some financial trouble. And they auctioned my stuff off with out hesitation and didnt even notify my of the auction LOL

yes well thats why there are so many towing businesses, since they are legally the only ones allowed to steal your car, more or less ;p
you get pulled over for something, they have your car towed, you now have to pay some fine to the police/dmv. They **** you around for awhile. Your car sits in their lot for 2 weeks, now they want $500 more to give you your own car back, in addition to this time you were paying someone else to drive you to work or something, since you no longer have your car, you cant pay, they keep car.
towing companies are the only people who can use the abandonement law here in CT, afaik

This is how I picked up my 89 RS. Kid took it to a repair shop and never came to get it, so after a year the shop got the title though the state and put it up for sale.

I've done some work on it and just waiting to install headers and a new alt. and I'll be driving it later this month. The car is on the left here.

same here on my baby, the car broke down (fuel pump) on I95 and a towing company towed her away, pulled a title and sold it to a buddy of mine for $300 and in turn sold it to me for $500 after he put a new clutch and brakes. mind you this was also rust free, and unmolested.

Same way I got my car too :P

Car was towed for whatever reason and no one called or came to claim it and the car was sold to me. Though it did have a lein on it so I had to apply to get the title

Got mine before the tow truck came and got it. Failed smog and the owner was going to let the state take it and get their 1,000 bucks. It was for sale for 1,700 but they took 1,000 and I drove it home.
