Custom "5 in" Spoiler
After hearing horror stories about the fit of the Hawks 5" spoiler I have decided I can build my own for less money. I have tried to carry the lines of the car into the spoiler; thus, I have tried to match the rake of the A-pillar and the slope of the tail lights. I fear that this causes to large of a spoiler. I could slide the front line back creating a smaller base, but I don't want the sides to look bad either. I have included Neil's 5" spoiler so that you can see the difference in angles. Tell me what you think. Flame it if you must, but constructiveness is preferred!

Hard to say, since the pics are from different sides, different angles, and your lens is covered.
Match Niels pic....angle/side,lens....and I can form an opinion better.

I don't have lenses or a bumper or anything on the car. It doesn't even have 2 doors on it at the moment. I will try to get some better shots today when I get done with class. I am hoping to get going on my foam plug today

if you think you can "mass" produce such a spoiler for less than spohn, maybe we can work something out?

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
I am trying to decide if it would be better to make a shell that one could then glue over top of a slightly modified stock spoiler. Cutting the front lip back 1/2" or so for example. This should be within the capabilities of the average TGO member, and it would save us all a lot of money.

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler

a quick update on progress. still a long way to go
Getting the lines to match those of the rest of the car is the hardest part. Should the corner be more or less rounded? There is definitely some shaping yet to do. If I can get it in primer by next week I will put it on an old IROC so that I know the lines match up before making the mold for Fiberglass work. Do you guys think I should make it a stand alone, or should I make it attach to the stock spoiler. Lastly, I am going to get rid of the "high" mount brake light in the original bumper. What do you think about a LED light bar across the center of the spoiler?

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
Looks sick! Hey can you get some more pictures, preferably from behind? I don't know, but maybe the corners might look better if they are a little sharper. Lets see how it looks on the IROC so you know what to do. Also, how would you attach the spoiler to original one?

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
are you building over the old spoiler?, Your making it with fiber glass or what are you using? is it going to be removable or are you shaping it with the car. Looks real sharp man, A1 makes me want to try hehe.

looks awsome man. It gives more looks to the back than just the plane small spoiler. More rear down force lol lol

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
I am building this plug over the stock spoiler. It wa a good surface to glue foam to and then bondo over.
Once the plug is perfect I will make a mold of the plug. Then this mold will be used to make the spoiler. I have not decided if I will make the finished product a stand alone spoiler, or if I want it to glue to a stock spoiler.
I'm sure there is more downforce, but I assure you that no aerodynamical analysis or wind tunnel testing has been, or ever will be, done during my building process. At least we have a reason for more down force over the rear tires. Unlike those honda civics with bolt on spoilers.

I'm a fan of the idea.. and if when it's painted on a car i'm sure it will look better.. but this seems bigger? maybe it's just me.. or those pics.. but i personally think they should of made the rear spoiler a little bigger stock.. they look nicer slightly bigger

If you're looking to produce them and sell them I say make it a stand alone as opposed to attaching to a stock one. Not everyone has a stock one to start with and who wants to buy a stock one and your add on? As far as the corners I think they should just match the sharpness of the quarter panel.

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
Honestly, that's perfect.
I always hated the Hawks spoiler because it wasn't rounded on the sides like the stock spoiler and it was too steep and didnt match any other angle on the car, plus it apparently never fit right to begin with.
I've wanted to make my own spoiler for a while, and that's EXACTLY what I was going to do. Match the slope of the A-pillar and round the corners off like the stock spoiler.
Looks great to me!
If anything, I would consider making it a slight tad shorter... but it looks good. These kinds of things are so subjective, but you're onto something because it's just close enough that it looks like it's something GM might have put on these things stock, and that's the kind of class and taste I wish more aftermarket companies would have.

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
Thanks for the comments. I am going to have to make a mold of the top so if someone wants to mount it to the stock spoiler they can. Then later I can look into making another piece that would glue into the base to make it a stand alone. At this point I am more concerned with getting the first one done (MINE) becuase I have to have mine done to paint my car. I already have 3 people saying they want one when I am done. How many more people think they would want one? If it is enough people I will try to make my molds really strong so they will last, but this is my first time trying to do this sort of thing

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
What is the best way to make it a stand alone piece? I am new to this much fiberglass. I have never bonded layers like in a hood. Is bonding a top and bottom the way to make this one piece? How would I get studs in the fiberglass

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
looks great man, depending on how it turns out i might have to let go of my high rise spoiler lol Could you take the extention and mold it to the stock spoiler. This way it has the studs and shape already and all you have to do it when you make the spoiler just mold into the spoiler. mabye if you took a stock one and drilled some holes in the top of it so that the fiberglass could go inside of the spoiler and form a bond it would work. Also the third brake light would look alright but i like it old school. If you sold them how much you think that you would sell them for? I wanted a hawks 5 Inch but i just dont see $300+ for a spoiler that you could have to get repaired when you get it. Great job man -Matt

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
The plan from the start was to make it an outer shell that could be fit onto the stock spoiler with some modification to the slock spoiler. This would cut WAY down on the cost, and I think most TGO users are capable would be capable of such work. I have also recieved some demand for a true bolt on version for people that don't have a good stock spoiler. This might be a second option, but I wont persue that untill my car is painted. One thing at a time
on the topic of price... I have NO IDEA I am sure it will be cheaper than the Hawks spoiler, but I have not even made the mold yet. I hope to have a mold capable of pulling parts from by the end of the week or sooner.

WOW thanks for the compliment. It makes the hours and hours of work seem worth it. Just wait untill I have all the fiberglass work done and this thing is painted!!!!!!!!!!

Dude, I think it looks perfect. If I were to do this, (and I have wanted to for a while, just other things come first) I'd do it the exact same way you did. If you sell molds or whatev for these to mount to the original spoiler, I'd definately be on your list. Good JOB!

Looks great keep up the good work! I think the idea for the piece to go over the stock spoiler is a great option for us guys who want a 5" but don't have the time or money to put into hours of fitment and piant work to get these ones to fit. I think if possible you should try to make one of each. A stand alone and one to fit a stock spoiler! Looking forward to seeing how this all pans out!

It is coming along slowly. This week I am trying to get it primed and sanded so I can make the mold. School and work are taking up a lot of time currently.

Re: Custom "5 in" Spoiler
I am making the mold so that I can make multiple spoilers. Before I sell them though I need to get mine finished so that I can paint my car. Once my car is painted with this spoiler on it I will post up a ton of pics and we can talk about selling it. I am torn on how to make the supports right now. I am thinking of making the shell and seeing if it will fit on the original spoiler, but much of the original will have to be removed to make the skin fit. The other option is to glue in studs somehow. Any ideas? Machining supports that studs would thread into and that could be glued in was one option I had thought of. Let me know what you guys are thinking. Keep in mind we want to make a god spoiler at an even better price!

studs would have to be internal with some support. otherwise i think it would break off from vibration alone. keep working
