Inner Rear Wheel Well

I recently decided not to sell my car, so now im planning on restoring it. Honestly I havent taken a good look at the car since last summer and well this winter has really beat up the body. So my first question in which im sure is going to be a lot of questions is, where can I order a new inner rear wheel well? I have looked around and I cant seem to find them I can find rear quarter skins and all that but i also need to repair the inside. Thank you.

Wow, ironic post, I just repaired mine today. It really depends on what you want to spend. I just used fiber glass cloth, and some resin, pushed it in to the hole, and undercoated the hell out of it. Inside, and out.

Have you checked ebay at all?

I checked and didnt have much luck. How hard was it to repair with the fiber glass? I still have the thick under coating on it still. Im not sure how bad it is really until i remove that undercoat.

Re: Inner Rear Wheel Well

there really is no inner real wheel well that is replaceable, its all part of the rear body and spotwelded in many places and merged with many other pieces of metal. I dont know how much damage/rust you are dealing with but you are probably going to have to fabricate patch panels and fix it that way.

Ive got both of my rear "wheel wells" in about 100 pieces in a box in the garage right now

you can scrape the undercoating off with a flat screwdriver, it worked very well for me. or a 1" putty knife or something,

do you have any pics of what you are dealing with?

Depends totally on how warm it is, here it's 37* F so it took pretty much all day to harden, with heat lamps. But to put the fiber glass there, it took about 5 minutes. The holes in my car were right under the bracket on the passenger side, it was a 3/8 bolt holding on to the wheel well, so we had to push the fiber glass under that. The hole was about 5 1/2 Inches long, and the 2nd holes in that same wheel well was about the size of a quarter.

The drivers side had a hole about the size of a loonie (1 1/4 inch diameter). That we just loaded up the fiberglass with resin, and shoved through, made it flush, and waited for it to harden. With the undercoating on, it looks pretty decent. It's my daily driver, so it's not going in to any car shows any time soon.

Total amount I spent was about 7.99$ for the can of undercoating. We already had the resin, hardener, and fiberglass cloth.

Re: Inner Rear Wheel Well

thats some pretty good looking undercoating, was it redone before?

My car had rust in the same areas. Years ago i wanted to just get the rust out so it wouldn't spread. I cut the bad spots out with a sawzall, pretty much the whole lip on the passengerside. Then i just used some think mastic tape, about 4" wide to seal it up, until i could fix it. I didnt have a welder or and money at the time.

I just recently removed the tape when i started my mini-tubbing project and there was no extra rust. Then i chopped everything out.

As for you, you need to remove all the undercoating around the rust and find it all. You will need to cut it out and if you weld, form sheet metal to replace what you removed, or have a shop do it. then paint and re-undercoat

OK, so a cut and weld would prolly be the best way to fix it? Im not sure about the undercoating im sure it was redone before.

if its bad, it the way to go, not fiberglass.

It may not be that bad, not likely, but possible. Chip off the UC and see if the metal is still somewhat solid, or if its all just dust and metal flakes.

Re: Inner Rear Wheel Well

It all depends on how much time, money, and effort you want to put in to it. A cut and weld would be the 'best' way to do it, but you could always use POR15. If you do the process correctly, it's just as good as steel. Cut and weld is truly a pain, especially if you've never done it.

Re: Inner Rear Wheel Well

i bought a donor car just for this case. the car i bought was in a front end collision. body in very good condition from doors back. rear quarters, wheel wells, floors all in great shape. the best way to repair rust is to get rid of it. i used por15 on my truck and plow. that stuff is just about bullet proof if applied right.

Re: Inner Rear Wheel Well

Well he posted a thread I was going to make so heres my problem. My car has some minor rust on wheel well body around where the body ends with the wheel well. What can I do to get rid of it. I was thinking about just sanding it down and repaint it with rust proof paint.
