Paint without prep?

Hello.
I am doing an engine swap this weekend. I was thinking.. When i pull the old engine. If I pressure wash it, and tape stuff off, can i just put a coat of paint over the old paint? I just want it to look moderatly better than it does right now.

Or will it just not work out.

Re: Paint without prep?

At least use a red scotchbrite pad. Doesn't matter how clean, if there's no sanding, the paint will just flake off and look horible.

Re: Paint without prep?

After the scotchbrite pad, you should still clean it with some type of solvent that will remove all of the left over oil residue. Your local auto parts store should have some stuff over in the paint section that is used specifically for this purpose.

Re: Paint without prep?

i am kinda in the same boat. i have my car almost ready for primer and want to do a two tone. right now the car is black and i have the body sanded down pretty well but the door jams i only scuffed with 100 grit then some scotch brite. if i were to paint over the black with burnt orange would the orange come out darker then on the parts of the car that i do use gray primer on. i just dont want to have to block sand the primer in the door jams since it is so thight in there. i am going to use base/ clear paint if that matters and i should have plenty, so if laying it on thick will work that would be great.

Re: Paint without prep?

if you do 3 coats all over the difference shouldnt be very noticeable (if at all), and personally since its door jams I wouldnt worry too much but your other option is to use a sealer over the whole car, that way it'd be all one color before spraying.

Re: Paint without prep?

I don't think you are going to be happy with it if you scuffed it with 100grit. Too late now but at least 320 might have been a better choice for scuffing it up.
