new paint chips way to easy
new paint chips way to easy
all right where to start. i did a lot of body work to the car this year. painted it with ppg bc/cc. i had a few mishaps with my hatch breaking and messing up both my rear quarters, but that is a different issue all together. i did all of the bc, and did the cc on the trim. not one problem with that stuff. this ******* that someone recomended to me did the rest. i know that i got ripped in the deal however not to worried about that. i haven't wetsanded or buffed yet and the paint has dried for a few months now. the problem i am having is that i noticed that the clear on the car seems like it has dry patches to it. it doesnt have that wet orange peel look to it, across the whole car. certain spots look very dry if that makes any sense to you. the real problem is that the paint in those areas chip of really easy. for instance my buddy dropped a 1/4 drive 8mm socket from about an inch above the car and it chipped the paint. that doesn't seem like it would be enought to do it. but pretty much all across the car it is about the same. i have about 15 grand into the car across the board right now and want it done right. so if that means painting it again that is something i will have to do. i have checked with local body shops and they aren't very helpful, so please give me some opinions. will reclear coating the car help or am i at a total loss on this paint job

i know that with the paint i used, i had to put the paint and clear on the car within 12 hours. it almost seems like the guy you had do your car might have waited to long or somthing.?. Is the paint chipping off or is the clear coat chipping off? sorry i cant help but i would love to know the answers to your questions!!
Re: new paint chips way to easy
well does the clear look "milky"? If so, that could mean he waited too long in between the BC and the CC. I painted my car with PPG (good **** for the price BTW) and i sprayed the clear at the proper flash time. The paint should have some sort of information sheet and should tell how long to wait between coats of BC and between BC and CC and how long to wait between coats of CC.
Does the whole paint chip off or just the clear? If the whole paint comes off it could be that the primer was not prepped right. You have to use a degreaser cleaner before the BC is put on or it will **** on you later.
If the paint or the clear comes off really easy, then the car needs to be repainted. If you just re-clear, it will happen again. Whole car painted at one sitting. Good luck.

I agree..repaint the whole car..just block it down really good with 320. Then go up for there but it its dry looking..he prob couldnt spray worht a ****..Runs are better than dry spots..because they can be sanded and buffed out. And if he didnt get enough clear on..it can flake off too..

"just block it down really good with 320"
really good....remove all new cc/bc especially if it is your bc that is chipping. i would go more aggresive then 320 grit to start!

Re: new paint chips way to easy
I just painted my 1st car and got alot of helpful info from a site called
www.autobodystore.com Len sells tools and equipment but him and the other guys give away free advice.
Sorry I dont know how to post links but the knowledge these guys have is worth typing in an address.
Sounds to me either the time between coats was too long or the clear was put on dry.
Either way try that site and good luck

i saw this site when i was doing the body work and checked it out a couple of times, didn't know that the was a forum attached to it. the forum is great for newbie painters. it looks like there isn't enough clear on the car from what the guys were saying. they recomend that i fix the few chips that i have, scuff and reclear the entire car with atleast two more wet coats.
