Clearcoat

My cleat coat is worn through on my 4th gen spoiler. Now it looks all dull and im wondering what would be the best way to fix her up.

My plan is to rough the entire spoiler up with 1000 grit then spray clear.
I have a Mini HVLP gun (used for painting Bikes) but i dont want to spend 100+ on a gallon of clear+hardener+reducer. Does anybody know if they sell smaller quantities of clear and if so where I could purchase it. Its either that or I use rattle can clear which I have never used before and am kind of afraid to try. One more question, about how much should I need to do it?

Thanks in advance

Re: Clearcoat

they sell clear in any size you need (pint through gallon) and you should rough it up with about 600 grit before re-clearing.
the clears not chipping is it??

you can buy it from any automotive paint supplier, the easiest place that I'd recommend is Napa, they sell dupont paints, which is a good brand.

Re: Clearcoat

No its not chipping at all it just looks like maybe the guy I had paint it 10 years ago went light on the clear. The 4th gen spoiler is perfectly horizontal and water just tends to sit there and weather it. Sadly my car had to spend the last 3 years outdoors until this last winter, Now it finally has its own year round home.

Ill give napa a try. How much clear and hardener do you think it will take for 2-3 coats?

Re: Clearcoat

depending on the mixing ratio you might be able to get away with a pint of clear, since once you factor in the hardner/reducer or cataylist you really get around a quart of spray-able material.

Re: Clearcoat

Thanks for the advice, I just checked out your car domain. Wow that is one hell of a restoration. I did the same thing when I was your age (except I had the paint done) and now im almost 30 and still have the car. Never regretted the time or the money it took to do it either. One piece of advice, 300 hp will not be enough to keep you happy for long.

Re: Clearcoat

If your clearcoat has broken down and worn off you may find that you need to start with a fresh coat of color before you reclear it. If there is still some good clear over the existing color you may be alright. And personally I think I'd go with 1000 grit or finer to preserve as much original paint as possible, unless the finish is in really bad shape.
