Thought My Car Was Pretty Clean Until...

Today I was replacing the door weather stripping and when I ripped the original crap off the drivers side door, I found EXTENSIVE rot all along the bottom edge.

Apparently, the 25 year old weatherstripping was so badly deteriorated it was acting like a sponge (If you squeezed it water would gush out from all the cracks, tears and pinholes) and acted as a clip on rot accelerator.

Also Looking under the car, at the very back Bewteen the bumper and gas tank there is a metal lip that is about the width of the gas tank. This piece is also badly rotted. Poking and squeezing it caused huge chunks of rotted metal to fall to the street. I'll grab a picture of this piece in the next day or so. Also in the back passenger side fenderwell there appears to be a small area of rot where the undercoating was compromised.

When I take the car for new paint and bodywork this summer I'm going to have the shop cut out these sections and weld in new material. I need to know the name of the piece in the back of the car that is rotted so I can buy a replacement.

Maybe you should just find another 'rust free' iroc around. If the doors and other body parts are rusted, you must wonder what else could be wrong. There are several great rust free IROC's for sale here in Cali. Sometimes it better to start anew, rather than working with what you have.

Depends where he is from. Here in MA, that car would be considered "rust free"

Seriously though, all is not lost. My car had equally bad doors and no rust anywhere else.

I think the piece on the back of the car that you are talking about is the inner bumper. It is the piece that the bumper cover attaches to on the bottom side? Those are very often badly rusted and it's not uncommon for them to be rusted out on otherwise rust free cars. If that's the case, that piece is easily unbolted and replaced so it's not a big issue.

Since the door panel is a thirdgen, i'd say it's the car parked next to his

I was thinking it was a super trick F150 with suicide doors that also flip over and then extend several feet from the truck to about where they would be if they were attached to an F body parked next to it

Re: Thought My Car Was Pretty Clean Until...

LOL! Now that I look at the pic, it does appear that I have a 3rd gen door bolted to a work van.

But that is actually the van parked next to me. The angle the picture was taken at is misleading.

And about the new car comment, I think It's pretty sad here how people seem to be devoted to thirdgens in general, just not their thirdgen. As soon as a slight problem arises, It's on to the next one.
