Can't get the gas tank out
So here's the deal I took everything there is off that I know of to get the tank off. But there is one snag. The hose on the tank that runs to the gas tank door is like lodged up so it's not letting me take the tank out.
It is steal so there's really no give and I don't want to cut it.
So my question is what do I have to do to get the tank out if you could respond asap as I'm working on it tonight
Thanks

I took off the rear sway bar and the one above that as well
the two straps and unhooked all the gas lines

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
You need to completely drop the rear end out of the way. Last time I did it I removed the Lower Control Arms, Panhard bar and brace, driveshaft and torque arm. I then took the little bolt holding the brake hard lines to the axle so I could get more clearance. Basically the axle was completely disconnected except the brake lines and that was stretched pretty good.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
Unfortunately you have to bend the filler neck up a bit so you can sneak the front passenger corner of the tank past the suspension.
Not an easy job and you could break the seam on the neck by the tank so be super careful.

I've yet to take mine out.
IDK but does the plastic piece around the filler neck come off b4 you try to lower the tank?

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
I cut the metal neck in half and dropped it out without touching axle. Put it back in and spliced the two pieces with a rubber hose and clamps. I recommend draining the fuel with a siphon or pump first, then either filling it with water until it overflows or stuffing enough wet rags down the pipe to reach past the cut mark.
Re: Can't get the gas tank out
I've always removed it, best to have as much room as possible.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
The axle has to be out of the way. If your lucky enough to have it on a lift, you can disconnent the torque arm, the shocks, the gas fiiller door & neck surround piece & PHB.....It can hang by the LCAs. Otherwise, jack the car up & diconnect al that, plus roll it out on the wheels.
When you get the car up high enough, the tank can come down SOME, then with some careful twisting, turning & manuevering, it comes out. Just not straight down.

When i did mine i didn't have to cut or bend the filler neck at all. I did it by myself twice. Like Stephen says careful twisting and turning and it will come out.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
Well I got it out.
I didn't have to drop the rear end or cut anything.
All I did was unhook all the gas lines from the tank and with a littler help of a friend it came out with out a problm. All I really did was take the control arm off and the gas tank straps and the gas lines as simple as that. Thanks forthe help everyone

It(diff) has always had to come all the way down for me. 3 diff cars.
Re: Can't get the gas tank out
I was thinking if you air the shocks up that would move the body futher from the axle and make it eaiser to remove the tank. I've nevered removed the gas tank on a thirdgen so I didnt know you had to remove the shocks and springs.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
I might be a little late to the party, were you able to get it done? I had to wrestle with mine a bit, but it was doable. Definitely, at bare minimum, drop the passenger side of the rear end. I had an aftermarket exhaust, so that had to come down as well. Did a little bit of rotating the tank and may have tweaked the filler neck a bit, but I was able to get it down. Your life will be 10x easier if you drain as much gas out as possible.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
Sure go ahead, air those bad boys up, sooner or later they will explode, or have internal stops and will stop moving long before the rear is anywhere close to being low enough.
Not sure how the OP got the tank out like he did without breaking the filler neck. You have to disconnect everything, not the LCA's or torque, unbolt the shocks, panhard and support, unbolt the brake flen line mounting bracket to get a little more flex in the brake lines, jack the car up as high as youi can saftly get it, and drop the rear as low as you can possible get it. After that, the tank comes right out.
I've done a couple and its really not that bad of a job, only issues would be rusted/rotted bolts and removing the exhaust
Re: Can't get the gas tank out
The hard part is getting it back in! I've installed a junk stock thirdgen tank once and never again since I discovered the LS1 gas tank. LS1 99-02 f-body plastic tanks with the rubber hose filler neck are so much easier to physically install/remove and will never have leaking gas at the filler neck problem because plastic doesn't rust. Only bad thing is you have to cut/flare fuel lines.

i agree, i swapped in a 4th gen style aluminum tank and the rubber filler neck parts made life so much easier.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
If it helps to drain the tank.
I found that most of my GM cars and trucks there is a wire (red single spade connector up by the pass side firewall and some by the driver side firewall) not connected to any thing.
When you connect it to 12v it causes the fuel pump to run continuously.
I usually disconnect the fuel line and pump the gas tank as dry as it will.
I hate pulling tanks with gas sloshing all around!

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
Take the black plastic and gas tank door off 1st. Also remove the gas cap.
Take the rear end out of the car. Meaning its in the other corner of the shop.
I have done this 5 times. All on Jack Stands. Never damaged anything.
It gets easier every time.
Still no fun.

Re: Can't get the gas tank out
i just dropped my tank out and put it back in today. wow that was fun!!!!!!!
My tank was completely rust free, i just took out the spring and sway bar bushing ends (whatever you call them) and took off the bottom bolt on the shock. all on the passanger side. considering the cond. of my tank, all i had to do was pull down on the tank to bend the filler neck, (only about half an inch) and she popped right out. when i put it back in and had everything bolted back together i took the handle from my breaker bar and stuffed it in the filler neck and bent it back. to my suprise it really didnt need to be bent that far at all. didnt even have to take out the plastic housing in the gas hatch. but still, getting all those parts off and breaking loose all those bolts still had me swearing. i think if I ever have to do it again , its definitly getting a plastic tank with a seperated filler neck. I dont feel like busting my hands up again for a steel tank.
