Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
Well I finally adressed my broken windshield today... and I was prepared for a kick in the nuts, but it surprizingly was done in about an hours time..... if you subtract the drive and the time BS'n with a cold one, and scaping and regluing my inspection sticker. That includes removing the glass from the donor at the junkyard, and removing and reinstalling the glass into my TA. It was almost too easy....Now Im just waiting for it to rain so I can pride myself on a No-Leak installation

Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
That easy eh? I'll give mine a shot then, I've been kinda worried it would be more of a pain than it's worth. The crack in my windsheild has become so bad that I find myself turning tilting my head to the left to look around it...
Maybe I should get on that huh? lol
Grats on the sucessful transplant!

Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
Well here is the advice I can give......1st get a wire saw from NAPA ($11) to remove the glass.....Thats the best tool....fukk a cold knife.......2nd Just because it was cold out I brought a propane torch........start at the lower drivers corner almost directly below the VIN tag, so you can see the wire go thru and be sure its on top of the dash pad......to start the wire saw you have to get it between the glass and the metal ......so just take a lighter or said torch and heat up the end of the wire till it glows a bit and turns white and push it thru.....it will slide in like it was greased if its hot enuff.....then thats when I got the Idea to use the torch to heat up the glass a bit.....I moved it really quick and did not focus the heat on any 1 place for too long ....just warm enuff so it felt like the glass on a hott summer day...took maybe 5 mins or so......then the wire glided thru the sealant.......it took less than 5 mins to cut all the way around the frame and remove the glass.......the sealant was a gooey, sticky mess, but it was 100 times easier than the last one I pulled and faster too!!!! Give it a whirl......it is easier than u think.......BTW I used a tube of 3M window weld "Nascar" sealant from advance auto ($20) to install the glass in my car , when U cut the tip of the tube, cut it in the shape of a concave "V" so you get a nice thick bead when you are appying it........Have fun!!!!!!
All and all my "New" windshield cost less than $60........SCORE!!!!

Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
Nice! I'm certain mine will take longer because I have a few bubbles of rust that I want to treat before installing the new one. Sounds fairly straight forward though, I'm almost tempted to kick it out from inside or shoulder it out...though I'm certain picking up the glass wouldn't be near as fun after that.
Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
im gonna have to do that with mine because the wife owned the car originaly, at 17 and she put the replacment windsheild in it then....now it leaks at the mirror, ill probably have to repair some rust so im gonna check on some tipe of rust proofin before i put the windshield back in but thanks for the removal tip. that will come in handy for me.
Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
I followed your advice while replacing my windshield today. Thank you very much, it was very helpful.

Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
I tried it yesterday and I cant seem to get the wire through. It always wants to go halfway in and then bend on me. Should I double over the wire saw or somethin??
Will this work for a t-top?
So I saw this thread and through it was very applicable to what I'm currently trying to do. So I'm getting my 91 GTA all fixed up and ready to sell because I'm in the market for a 77 TA. Anyway, about 3 weeks ago a t-top blew out on me and smashed all over the road. I got a replacement for $20, but here's the problem. My t-top was painted. The metal strip that you can see above the window was not black, but the color of my car.
So, I talked to the guy at advanced auto and told him what I wanted to do. He gave me a tube of the 3M windshield chalk. It cost $25!! He also told me to get a wire saw like you guys are talking about. Do you guys think that I can cut the glass t-top from its metal frame and transplant it onto my old metal, painted frame?? I figured if that 3M sealant is for windshields than I would be fine, but I'm still hesitant to do this and ruin a t-top

Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
I personally would just paint both of them with Trim Black and call it good. Trim (sort of a semi-gloss black) is the proper color for the t-top bars.
Re: Replaced my winshield today EASY!!!!!!
im going to have to do this soon, my question is how did you transport the windsheild? im really worried about breaking it

If you get to much heat on the ttop it will shatter its tempered glass and you cant saw it like a windshield you chip it it shatters be carefull.

So 8point you don't think I should even try this? I really don't want to paint the t-top the color of my car. I guess I could paint both of mine that I have black. I could do that myself without having to take it in to be painted. How should I go about doing that? Is there anyone that thinks I could work on the t-top I have?
